Silver Lake, my own neighborhood, is a historic epicenter of the gay rights movement, and was a refuge for many LGBTQ+ people in the mid-20th century. But this movement was met with real homophobia as well, in ways that were inscribed on the physical spaces of the neighborhood.

In neighborhoods across the city where LGBTQ+ residents lived, the city installed “No Cruising” signs and signs prohibiting U-turns between midnight & 6am targeted explicitly at gay men looking for partners. While many of these signs were removed over recent years, some remained.

Yesterday, I am proud to say that we removed the last of these signs in Silver Lake, taking down these relics of this city’s homophobic past. These particular signs were outside the AT Center, a landmark LGBTQ+ recovery & wellness center, where we celebrated the sign removal.

I was also grateful for the presence of Isaac and Joel from Meztli Projects, an Indigenous arts and culture collaborative.
