Airbending did get sub-techniques, they’re just not the flashy combat ones people usually count.

Flight (Guru Laghima and Zaheer) and spiritual/astral projection (Jinora and later airbenders) are the real advanced forms. Both require genuine detachment and spiritual mastery instead of just “push air harder.”

The reason it feels underdeveloped compared to metal, lava, blood, or lightning is cultural, not lazy writing. The other nations were constantly fighting or innovating for power and survival. The Air Nomads were isolationist pacifists whose entire philosophy was about freedom, non-attachment, and spiritual balance. Their “endgame” techniques lean into that instead of creating more ways to hurt people. Pacifism wasn’t a dead end it was the point of the element though was a bit detrimental to them.
