El martes 22 de marzo de 1955 se grabó en La Habana, Cuba, para el sello SEECO (7530-A), la icónica canción el ‘𝗬𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼’. Obra compuesta a inicios de los años 50 por el cubano Néstor Milí Bustillo y luego interpretada por Celia Cruz con la legendaria Sonora Matancera.

Esta pieza es un pregón cubano, un género musical urbano que se originó en las calles hace más de un siglo. La canción relata la historia de un boticario o curandero ambulante con profundos conocimientos en la materia, que recorría los barrios y plazas de La Habana, quizás con una canasta sobre la cabeza o con una carretilla de madera, proclamando pregones ingeniosos sobre los usos y propiedades curativas de las plantas que vendía. En esa época, los supuestos poderes mágicos de las hierbas estaban arraigados en creencias populares, saberes transmitidos de generación en generación y tradiciones ancestrales.

El origen de la canción lo relata Néstor Milí Olivera, hijo del compositor. Cuenta que su padre estaba conversando con el barbero Dulfo frente al cine Strand, en el parque Trillo, hoy conocido como El Palacio de la Rumba, cuando apareció una vendedora de hierbas medicinales anunciando su mercancía. Mientras ella pregonaba ‘traigo yerba santa’, Milí respondió en tono jocoso ‘pa’ la garganta’, y así, entre respuestas improvisadas y rimas espontáneas, como cuando ella dijo ‘traigo caisimón’ y él contestó ‘pa’ la hinchazón’, fue naciendo la idea. Ese intercambio se repitió varias veces hasta que, entusiasmado, le dijo a su amigo que se iba a casa porque ya tenía una canción lista para armar.

The male’s job is an act of total devotion: he must forage and deliver every single meal to the female and their chicks through that tiny slit, often making hundreds of trips a day.
This dedication ensures protection from predators and the success of the next generation.
