We are calling on the UK government to take swift action and back a domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry
The SAF industry is one of the fastest growing industries on the planet, with demand outstripping supply
🧵👇
In South England, the SAF industry is rapidly developing, expected to create 3,050 skilled jobs and add £550 million to the local economy by 2030.✈️
Key projects include ExxonMobil’s Methanol to Jet initiative at Fawley, backed by £6m of government funding, and Firefly Green Fuels' facility in Harwich, converting biosolids into SAF by 2028/29.
These projects are helping create new green jobs in the region, effectively repurposing existing industrial sites and enhancing the local economy.

Our SAF journey continues with a short flight just North from the Humber to Teesside! ✈️
Here, projects like Alfanar’s Lighthouse Green Fuels project, LanzaJet's Project Speedbird, Arcadia’s Project Naboo and Willis Sustainable Fuels are using new SAF production technologies, with the potential to create up to 1,390 jobs and contribute £250 million to the economy by 2030.
Our discussions with MPs across the region confirm mutual understanding that SAF development creates long-term skilled employment, attracts capital investment, and strengthens the region's position in the UK's energy transition.
Teesside isn’t just ready to be part of the SAF story, it’s helping write it.
We’ve had many productive conversations with MPs across the region, confirming strong local support for integrating SAF into the region's industrial strategy.
Delighted to have spoken in the Second Reading of this important legislation this week.
SAF is a huge economic opportunity for Fife and Scotland and will help us meet carbon reduction targets.
The second reading of the SAF Bill delivered exactly what we hoped to see – a united, cross-party commitment to building a thriving domestic SAF industry.
Key takeaways:
✅ Bill successfully passed Second Reading with broad cross-party support.
✅ Strong focus on feedstock availability, security and maximising the potential for 2G and 3G SAF production in the UK.
✅ Recognition of regional economic opportunities, particularly in North East, Humber, and Teesside, as well as devolved nations such as Scotland.
✅There will be a number of big discussions to be had over the coming months on feedstock availability, eligibility, planning and infrastructure, regulatory alignment and more.
We're particularly grateful to MPs @Euan4Falkirk and @GraemeDownieMP for directly referencing the Back British SAF campaign in their contributions, and to all parliamentarians who used our briefing materials to inform their contributions to the session.
We will now move to the Committee Stage, where the Public Bill Committee will scrutinise the Bill clause-by-clause. Once this stage is finished, the Bill returns to the floor of the House for the Report Stage, where the amended Bill can be debated and further amendments proposed. The Report Stage will be followed immediately by debate on the Bill's Third Reading. Passing, it will head to the House of Lords.
Back British SAF are continuing to represent the views of its members as this Bill passes through Parliament. If you’d like to discuss our immediate activity, future plans for 2025/26 and how you can get involved, please do get in touch at [email protected]
1/ From Scotland's industrial heartlands, our SAF journey across the UK continues to Wales - a country with a deep and rich aviation history, that is now well positioned to drive the change towards a low-carbon future. ✈️
4/ With this certainty, SAF could play a vital role in attracting new investment, regenerating towns and cities around sites, and giving communities across the country a stake in the future of this growing industry.
5/ With the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Bill now introduced in parliament, we look forward to continuing to work with our supporters to maximise the opportunity SAF can deliver for Scotland and the UK more broadly.
