⚗️ CANCER CELLS NEED GLUCOSE AND GLUTAMINE. COULD MEBENDAZOLE TARGET BOTH ENERGY PATHWAYS?

Cancer metabolism research is exploring a strategy that goes beyond simply reducing sugar intake.

The idea is to place tumor cells under metabolic pressure by interfering with two important fuel pathways: glycolysis and glutaminolysis.

Researcher Dr. Thomas Seyfried has discussed combining nutritional ketosis with drugs that interfere with cancer-cell energy metabolism.

His central argument is that dietary changes alone cannot sufficiently reduce circulating glutamine because healthy tissues also require this amino acid.

🔬 This is where antiparasitic drug research becomes interesting.

Mebendazole, a human antiparasitic medicine, has been investigated for effects on cancer-cell metabolism, including glucose and glutamine utilization.

Fenbendazole, a veterinary antiparasitic compound, has also attracted experimental interest, although human cancer-treatment evidence remains limited.

The proposed strategy involves three components:

• Nutritional ketosis to alter metabolic conditions.

• Targeting glycolysis to interfere with glucose-dependent energy production.

• Targeting glutaminolysis to disrupt another potential tumor fuel source.

However, laboratory evidence of metabolic disruption does not establish that combining these interventions improves survival in cancer patients.

Glucose and glutamine are also essential to healthy cells, making selective targeting and safety important challenges.

The scientific opportunity is understanding metabolic vulnerabilities without assuming that starving tumor pathways will selectively eliminate cancer.
