The IADL and the Taskforce of Political Repression (NLG) were just about to introduce an important webinar on the use of Sanctions and Designations as a tool of political repression, by the US and other states, before Zoom censored the event.

We invited 2 individuals who have been impacted by the weaponization of these policies, which is clearly within our rights.

Almost 300 people registered for the webinar; one minute before it was to begin, Zoom shut down the webinar, essentially sanctioning us.

The Jewish activist Tony Greenstein, whose opposition to the Gaza genocide will see him on trial in August for "supporting terrorism", is now being hounded – like other prominent Palestine solidarity activists – with a freeze on his bank accounts.

This is being directed by the government through the National Crime Agency.

Santander are the latest culprits to engage in what Greenstein calls "financial terrorism", after similar bank freezes from Nationwide, HSBC and First Direct.

One of the accounts frozen by Santander held money raised to help a Palestinian children's centre in Jenin.

As Greenstien notes, Jenin's children "suffer enough at the hands of the terrorist IDF without facing the terrorism of the British state acting via its banking system".

Guillou, who was part of the pre-trial chamber that issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, revealed that he can no longer use bank cards or access digital services in Europe. "The only cards we have in France are Visa and Mastercard," Guillou stated, noting that American financial hegemony has rendered his accounts useless and blocked his access to everyday platforms like PayPal, Apple ID, and Amazon.

The sanctions have created what the French jurist describes as a "civil death," mirroring the aggressive measures launched by the White House to obstruct the Palestine investigation. While the ICC is based in the Netherlands and supported by 124 member states, European banks are increasingly practicing "over-compliance" with US executive orders to avoid being disconnected from the dollar-clearing system. This financial blockade has extended beyond the courtroom, with reports of family members facing revoked visas and frozen education funds, creating a "ratcheting up" of pressure that UN experts warn is designed to dismantle judicial independence.

Despite the personal toll, Guillou maintains that the measures will not deter the court from pursuing accountability for war crimes in Gaza. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently urged the European Commission to activate its "Blocking Statute" to shield ICC officials and UN rapporteurs from Washington’s extraterritorial reach.
