It's been a while since I read it but if I have one critique of this book from a historical/political perspective is if you're not familiar with Iran's history you're given a version of events which doesn't explore the Qajar impact or what I wrote above

Saw Marjane Satrapi has a new book out after more than a decade and I got reminded of why I disliked Persepolis. Honestly a bit shocked this revisionism about the MEK just merely "enter[ing] from Iraq" slipped under the radar for many in the Iranian diaspora.
Hang on, Iran's history with communism isn't as straightforward as you see in other places. There was great factionalism and different loyalties that clashed against each other. Many Iranian communists loyal to other states were not well received locally
stupid to be upset but still just terribly sad to see twitter campists slandering marjane when her biggest grievance with both the shah and the irgc was imprisoning and then executing her communist uncle who taught her about palestine, for being a soviet spy no less
Iran during this period had to deal with balkanization attempts from the Soviets. You also had one of the biggest parties loyal to Soviet interests especially as it related to oil, clashing with national interests. Then you had MEK loyal to Saddam. It's a lot more complicated
🚨🇮🇷 NEW: Iran's World Cup squad has been notified they must enter and leave US soil on the same day of their matches played in the United States
All of Iran’s group stage games are in the US
- 15th June - 🇳🇿 New Zealand
- 21st June - 🇧🇪 Belgium
- 26th June - 🇪🇬 Egypt
@AzadehMoaveni Wish I could agree. Some clips coming out show clearly that in the last few years she was moving increasingly right. I adored her & her work. But it seems she was doubling down on accusations of bigotry (which have been around for years. I blame her French side not her Iranian)
I'm sorry but if Fifa needs to grow a spine and interfere here. The host country is tampering with a participant by creating an uneven competitive situation
Iran’s soccer team and “necessary support” staff have been issued visas ahead of the World Cup but Donald Trump’s government “will not allow them to to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States”, an administration official has said.
The national team has faced months of uncertainty over travel and security arrangements for the tournament since the war began on February 28, when the U.S and Israel targeted Iran with military strikes.

Marx predates the age of imperialism & the developments since his death have shown us that the imperial core working class have long been lured into class-collaboration by the privileges that their ruling class have conceded to them, all financed by peripheral super-exploitation.
So yes, if you are outside the country you have to be careful about your language and activism so it doesn't give foreign states ammunition to help their cause against the Vatan. This is why I keep criticism of the internal affairs of Iran restricted to Iranian audiences
Seeing a lot of takes dismissing the obligation of the diasporas's loyalties to the sovereignty of Iran. This comes from a place of fundamentally not understanding Iran's historical and cultural background and why we as a society highly value loyalty to our own community
Iran was once at risk of losing its culture under the Rashidun and Umayyad caliphates. Since then we have an understanding we're never to aid foreign elements at the expense of the Vatan. Renewal is an important cultural theme so we value collectivism over US-style individualism
The reception of Persepolis is different now: it was published in 2000 & found warm reception in post-9/11 liberal culture; the movie was released in 2007, two years before the Green Mvmt. The milieu that supported its reception is gone, its audience jaded by war & genocide.
the funniest thing about American socialism is that it often starts from the assumption that the wealth of the imperial core already belongs to the people living there and just needs to be redistributed more fairly
Leftists, and especially global south leftists, must understand Americans will never, ever view us as full human beings, and they will never ever put our lives before their material interests.
