Example 678969: The USA has been dumping hundreds of millions of sterile flies out of airplanes onto Panama for the past 80 years. Specifially to keep a flesh eating parasites called the screwworm under control. These parasites can kill a full-size cow in less than 2 weeks. (Eating it alive) This practice has saved the US beef industry an estimated 900 million dollars over its history.
Yeah so Anyway... the parasites are headed our way again. 👍

Talked to a man who spent 15 years in Alabama prisons. He told me he spent the majority of his time sitting on his bed because there wasn't anything else to do, no programs, no job, no classes. Bored out of his mind. He said that's a big reason drugs are so bad. Sheer boredom.
I'll be attending the amazing Endgame: Relentless Power Policy Summit and Power Brunch. Let me know if you're planning to attend so that we can say Hi! 👋

Three police officers went to an *elementary* school in Tennessee & arrested four Black girls.
One girl fell to her knees. Another threw up. Police handcuffed the youngest, an 8 yo with pigtails.
Their supposed crime? Watching some boys fight — and not stopping them. (THREAD)
A report published by the DOJ last year found that more than 5,000 deaths in the criminal legal system had gone uncounted over the previous three years. Fifteen states failed to report any arrest-related deaths in that period. https://t.co/YPRVedhP0y
When someone dies of an overdose in jail, it's typically after just one day of incarceration. Intoxication deaths in jails increased 381% between 2000-2018.
Jails are no place to recover from a substance use disorder. States should invest in community health centers instead.
On this day in 1960, hundreds of white people armed with baseball bats and ax handles attacked Black activists for staging a peaceful sit-in at a "whites only" restaurant in Jacksonville, FL. To overcome racial inequality, we must confront our history. https://t.co/JdRl1YC9n3
Homicide rates did go up significantly in 2020. It's true. But where were the highest rates in the nation? Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina. See below. Truth is that red states and blue states both have higher & lower homicide rates. #GOPDebate
News:
The frequency with which Portland cops tell city residents that their crime-fighting hands are tied by MultCo DA Mike Schmidt is apparently so high that Chief Chuck Lovell sent an email to the entire police bureau telling them to stop doing so.

John Lewis' life reminds us that while the arc of the moral universe does bend toward justice, it doesn't bend by itself.
Thanks to @nowthisnews for shining a light on his critical work. May John's legacy continue to strengthen our resolve and propel us forward. #GoodTrouble
Remember when Covid hit, and “we were all in it together"?
Now? Covid isn't gone. But if you do take precautions, people will insult, mock, even harass you.
We learned something grim from the pandemic: People won't change a thing about their lives, even for their own good. 1/6
More than half of U.S. states have seen a decline in the number of licensed foster homes since 2021.
So what’s happening?
Child welfare authorities are placing foster youth in juvenile detention facilities instead. I’m glad more attention is being paid to this.
I think when the history of this period is written, our children and our grandchildren will ask us: "What were you doing when our house of democracy was on fire?"
All of us need to stand up and fight for our democracy in this moment.

The full Fifth Circuit will soon decide whether state prisoners must demonstrate innocence to obtain federal post-conviction relief.
I'm pleased to be part of this amicus brief on how such a rule is inconsistent with both the history & purpose of habeas:

Big blow to voting rights: Tennessee greatly narrowed when people can regain voting rights.
It's now fully up to state officials whether you do. And you need more money just to apply to vote!
Context: 21% of Black adults barred from vote.

“Neither John Lauro, in his five Sunday morning appearances, nor Trump, going back to his initial response to the indictment, has actually rebutted the charges.”
Exactly. The reason?
They can’t.

We are seeing clearly what Abbott’s Operation Lone Star program is doing to women and children. The inhumane treatment from this program is not solving our immigration problem but is causing a spectacle at the border.
"What’s more, the two vacancies are poised to become three: Navy Adm. Michael Gilday is stepping down this month, during Congress’ summer break. The Senate could’ve confirmed his successor, but Tuberville, again, wouldn’t let that happen."

If I had to pick one thing journalists miss in police reporting, it's that cops have tried to surveil, infiltrate, and violently crush every major social, economic, labor, environmental, and racial justice movement since 1900. It's what they spent their budgets on in every city.
