As one explanation of the tradition puts it, “Vodu Dagbe deity does not bite people… in fact, instead of it biting people, it heals and protects them.”
Children within the tradition are known to wrap snakes around their necks without fear, believing the reptiles are sacred .
The Vothun Dagbe is not only practised in Benin Republic. Here in Badagry, it is also part of the cultural heritage and traditional beliefs of the people.
At Idale Topo in Badagry is a shrine associated with Dagbe, the sacred serpent deity revered within the tradition.
The Whedah mark is traditionally made up of five marks on the face: one on the forehead, one on each side of the face close to the ears, and one on each cheek. The mark also has an important place in traditional leadership.
Traditionally, before becoming the Possu or any of the traditional white-cap chiefs in Badagry, one is required to have the Whedah mark.
Vothun Dagbe is believed by practitioners to protect and heal rather than harm.

the voices, the setting and the conversation take you straight back to the Nigeria of the 1980s.
And some of the issues being discussed still sound familiar today.
A nostalgic piece of Nigerian footage from 1984.
Journalist Onyeka Onwenu sits down with Chief Christopher Ogunbanjo of Metalbox Toyo Glass Company, Agbara, discussing the rising cost of production and the challenges facing Nigerian industries at the time.
The footage also features Chief Samuel Asabia, who became the first indigenous Managing Director and CEO of First Bank of Nigeria in 1975, speaking on the wider state of the Nigerian economy.
Over 40 years later, there is something striking about watching this again. The faces .

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO OFFER LAGOSIANS ?
Deputy Governor of Lagos State and Lagos APC Governorship Candidate, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat @drobafemihamzat
The Lagos APC Gubernatorial candidate explained his focus on strategies to improve Transportation and being able to move as many people around generally across Lagos State by increasing the integration of water, rail, and road transport.
- The OMI EKO Project: The continuation of the recently launched ‘OMI EKO Project’ by Governor Sanwo-Olu (17-11-2025), which seeks to introduce 77 electric ferries across Lagos waterways, routing ferries parallel to 3rd mainland bridge, new Morden terminals, new dredging routes to open up more channels and many more, the aim is to increase water usage for daily commuting and connect villages, neighborhoods, and city hubs.
- RAILWAY: The continuation of the #BlueLineRail linking Mile 2 to Okokomaiko and also linking the #RedLineRail with the #BlueLineRail at National Theatre. The lines are expected to move 500,000 people daily, dramatically improving cross-city mobility and shorten travel times, which will enable wider housing choices for commuters.
- BUS RAPID TRANSIT: Dr Hamzat has advocated for large BRT buses to move large passenger volumes, which is standard practice across the world. He says the Mini-buses are not sufficient enough for the passenger volume in the State.
- ROAD EXPANSION: He specifically referenced the Mende–Ojota Link Bridge and a planned phase two connection to the third axial road before the Third Mainland Bridge, he says this combined approach roads, BRT, rail, and ferries is meant to decongest main arteries and improve overall traffic flow.
Finally, For Housing, Accessibility and General Economic Impact, Dr Hamzat says a place like Ajara Estate, Badagry, once the transportation plans (rail, BRT, expanded roads and alternatives are right) residents that live farther from workplaces will have better access to the city center, which will drive prosperity, enable trade, industry, and innovation by reducing travel friction.
The Deputy Governor once again says moving people around massively and easily is a major importance to a big City like Lagos State.

During my rounds of consultations, I met with the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Oyekan Adekanmi Ilufemiloye Ajose Possi III.
I spoke with His Majesty and listened to his thoughts on the people and future of Apa Kingdom. It is important that we remain connected to the people and communities we seek to serve. The work continues and together, we will keep moving Lagos forward.
This morning, I joined our leaders, royal fathers, party stakeholders, party faithfuls and my brothers and sisters in Badagry, to receive our Gubernatorial Candidate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and our very own Deputy Governorship Candidate, Princess Sonayon Damilola James, at the Palace of the Alapa of Apa Kingdom.
It was yet another important moment to reaffirm our support and commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as we approach the forthcoming elections. Together, we remain committed to mobilising our people and working collectively towards delivering our votes for all APC candidates.

Earlier today, I joined the campaign train of our APC Governorship Candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and his running mate, Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, as we paid a homecoming visit to the Palace of the Alapa of Apa Egun-Awori Kingdom in Badagry West.
We also had the opportunity to engage with the traditional rulers from across the Badagry Division at Amuwo-Odofin. These engagements are important as we continue to strengthen our relationships with our traditional institutions, community stakeholders and the people of Badagry Division ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It was a meaningful day of consultation, connection and shared commitment to the continued progress of Lagos State and, particularly, our dear Badagry Division.
