For a struggling state like Yobe grappling with inadequate basic amenities, a N22bn flyover and a N19b (and growing) airport are not the most efficient utilisation of resources, to say the least.

A city doesn’t require a needless flyover to be aesthetically pleasing. I can’t recall ever spending more than 5mins at the location where the flyover was built. I guess there were no traffic studies or congestion data to justify the project. It seemed to have been built purely for aesthetics (and likely kickbacks).

Perhaps you could allocate less than 5% of that amount to improving the state cleanliness instead. Many of Damaturu’s drains are blocked and unkempt. The pictures below is Don Etiebet, the governors’ neighbourhood, that I snapped 2 years ago. Nothing much has changed.

Strategically deploying N40bn without kickbacks into a sector where the state already has a competitive advantage would have delivered far greater returns, both long and short term. Better still, channel it into a sector like Education where the state competes for the bottom 10 states. Better better still, revive the few moribund state-owned companies like Dofarga, Flour mills, Sahel Aluminum, Polythelene & sacks, Yobe Fertilizer and the likes.

This cargo airport project started in 2017 and became a conduit for siphoning public funds. The last governor “upgraded” the airport with N6bn six days before he left office after the initial N11.3bn project cost. There was a “revitalisation and airhub enhancement with environmental beautification” upgrade just last year. The state governor still wants to “remodel” the airport few months before he leaves after several upgrades.

Since its commissioning 3 years ago, the upgraded, revitalised airport and now set to be remodelled, has not recorded a single commercial flight and you can count the landings on your fingertips, most of them by the governor’s private jet and his associates.

This is akin to a man struggling with a leaking roof but chose to paint his apartment for the aesthetics.
