Indigenous Urban Planner in Perak. Currently active in various Professional & Indigenous NGOs in Malaysia. Interested in Drone, GIS, History & Language.
Coffee Shop in Johor Bahru, Year 2030
A weekend afternoon at a busy coffee shop near the heart of Johor Bahru.
The sound of cups clinking together, the aroma of traditional coffee, and freshly toasted kaya bread filled the air. In one corner, a group of young Malaysians sat with a Generation X mentor, discussing the changes that had taken place across Johor over the past few years.
Around the table sat Aiman, Muthu, Eric Chia, James Bawi, and Mr. Rafizi.
Aiman:Mr. Rafizi, compared to five years ago, I think the biggest change is that government assistance has become much more organized.
Mr. Rafizi:What do you mean by that?
Aiman:Back then, many people complained that aid never reached those who truly needed it.
Now, with the PADU system, people feel that assistance is targeted more accurately.
Muthu:I agree. I personally benefited from the Johor Entrepreneur Fund. In the past, funding was not always based on meritocracy but often influenced by race and religion. My workshop used to be very small. Now I have four full-time employees.
Eric Chia:For me, the Digital and Transparent Government agenda has been the most impressive. Today, citizens can check the status of state development projects online. In the past, many projects were awarded through direct negotiations, and only people with status or elite connections could secure them. Budgets were often inflated due to inefficiencies. That has increased public confidence in the administration.
James Bawi:There have been many improvements in rural areas as well. Village roads have been upgraded. The internet is more stable. Mobile healthcare clinics visit more frequently, and there are enough doctors to serve local communities. Many residents finally feel they are no longer being left behind. In the past, rural development often depended on whether people supported the government of the day. Now, it is based on the principle that public money should benefit the public.
I am grateful for this new direction under the Bersama Malaysia government in Johor.
A waiter arrived with their drinks.
The atmosphere inside the coffee shop became even livelier.
Mr. Rafizi:Out of the twelve initiatives in the Bersama Malaysia Johor 2030 Manifesto, which one has had the greatest impact on your life?
Aiman:The First Home for Johor Youth program. Many young people now have a real opportunity to own their first home.
Muthu:TVET and Artificial Intelligence training. The right skills training creates better employment opportunities.
Eric Chia:Johor Digital Internet. A digital economy requires fast and reliable internet access.
James Bawi:Balanced Development Across Johor.
Johor is more than just Johor Bahru,Other districts deserve to enjoy development as well.
Mr. Rafizi asked,If you had to describe this manifesto in one sentence, what would it be?
Aiman:The people's money must benefit the people.
Muthu:Policies should be based on data, not guesswork.
Eric Chia:Transparency builds trust.
James Bawi:Development must be felt by everyone, not just a few selected areas.
The group nodded while enjoying their drinks.
Outside, the busy rhythm of Johor Bahru continued.
Modern city buses passed by, Office workers were heading home, College students walked toward nearby public transportation stations.
Mr. Rafizi nodded and reflected on the past: In the end, every manifesto will be judged by the people based on results.
Not slogans alone.
Aiman:That's right.
People want to see homes being built.
Muthu:Jobs being created with high salaries.
Eric Chia:Efficient public services.
James Bawi:And development reaching every corner of Johor.
The sun slowly began to set over the Johor Bahru skyline.
Their conversation continued, filled with hope for a future that was more prosperous, transparent, and inclusive.
On the table lay a manifesto brochure displaying the campaign slogan:
Bersama Malaysia Johor 2030
"The People's Money for the People"
"Accurate Data • Targeted Assistance • Benefits for the People"
Future😉
"The Day He Walked Away"
A young Malaysian once asked an old statesman:
"How do we build a better Malaysia? Through stronger leaders or stronger laws?"
The old man smiled and replied:
"Neither. First, we must build better character."
He then pointed to a quote by Lord Acton, who famously said:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
"For decades," the old man said, "Malaysians have spent too much time searching for powerful politicians. We should have been searching for principled ones."
The young man looked confused.
The old man continued:
"A politician who fights to gain power is common. A politician willing to lose power to protect integrity is rare."
He then showed another quote, often attributed to Abraham Lincoln:
"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
"In Malaysia," he said, "many leaders promise reform before entering office. The real test comes after they obtain power. Do they remain accountable? Do they welcome scrutiny? Do they place justice above loyalty and personal interest?"
The young man thought about the corruption scandals, political defections, abuse of institutions, and endless power struggles that had dominated headlines for years.
The old man then spoke again:
"Malaysian does not need more politicians who ask, 'How long can I stay in power?' Malaysian needs more leaders who ask, 'What is the right thing to do, even if it costs me power?'"
He pointed to the Rukun Negara's principles of the rule of law and good behaviour and morality.
"Imagine a Malaysia," he said, "where young people enter politics not to become rich, famous, or untouchable, but to serve. Imagine leaders who resign when they fail, declare their assets openly, reject corruption, strengthen institutions, and accept criticism without fear."
The young man asked:
"Would such leaders survive in politics?"
The old man smiled.
"Perhaps not always. But they would leave something greater than power "a legacy."
As the sun set, the old man left the young Malaysian with one final thought:
"A nation becomes great not when it produces powerful politicians, but when it produces leaders whose integrity is stronger than their desire for power."
And perhaps that is Malaysia's challenge for the next generation not merely changing governments, parties, or personalities, but cultivating a new culture where character matters more than power, service matters more than status, and justice matters more than political survival.
Because the future of Malaysia will not be determined by the politicians we have today.
It will be determined by the leaders we choose to become tomorrow. 🇲🇾
As Saudara Rafizi Ramli often reminds Malaysians from time to time:
"Judge a leader by his character."
Likewise, judge "Parti Bersama Malaysia" not by its slogans or promises, but by its actions, ideas, and vision for the Malaysia we want to build together over the next 30 years.
Let the party be judged on whether it offers solutions for the future or merely repeats the politics of the past. Ultimately, it is for Malaysians to decide whether to continue addressing 21st-century challenges with 20th-century solutions.
If Parti Bersama Malaysia fails to convince the rakyat, it may disappear within three months, a year, or gradually become irrelevant. Ultimately, voters will decide whether to continue supporting race- and religion-based politics or embrace a different political approach. That is the reality of democracy.
The judgment belongs to the people.
As for us, our responsibility is simply to do our part, remain on the side of integrity, accountability, and justice, and strive to stay there with the guidance of Allah SWT.
The rest is beyond our control and rests upon ketentuan Allah SWT.
"Power is temporary. Character is permanent. In the end, history will judge us not by the positions we held, but by the principles we refused to abandon." 🇲🇾

Malangnya peratus Orang Asli dlm JAKOA amatlah kurang.. NGO yg dibenarkan masuk amatlah sukar mendptkan kelulusan.. arahan ni berbentuk penjajahan.. patut dimansuhkan peruntukan undang2 yg membenarkan JAKOA kawal pergerakan ke dlm kampung OA.
As a minority, maybe we still have hope. Banyak isu Orang Asli masih belum diselesaikan di bawah kerajaan MADANI especially isu tanah & kurang konsultasi dengan komuniti Orang Asli di Perak, Pahang dan Selangor. Maybe this can give OA a voice in the new Malaysia in the next PRU.
@jonben9517 Most of Non Malay MP / ADUN also dont give support... rape most of the forest or land thru legal channel... very lucky we have Sabah Sarawak...
