Thank you @hrw for this critical statement on the unjust deportations facing four individuals in the #Bahai community of #Qatar.
https://t.co/itBt7SVpA8
"The Qatari authorities since March 2026 have ordered at least four people with roles in key institutions of the minority Baha’i religion to leave the country, Human Rights Watch said today, based on information from informed sources. The four were ordered to leave without due process and with no legal pathway to challenge the orders. ... Qatar should cancel the orders to all four Baha’i members to leave the country, Human Rights Watch said."
Nahaleh Shahidi Yazdi Summoned to Serve Six-Year Prison Sentence
It was learned on 4 June 2026 that Mrs. Nahaleh Shahidi Yazdi, a Bahá’í and children’s rights advocate residing in Karaj, Alborz Province, was taken into custody on 2 June 2026, to begin serving her six-year prison sentence. Mrs. Shahidi Yazdi had been ordered to appear before the Enforcement of Sentences Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Kerman on 2 June 2026 for the implementation of her final sentence of six years’ discretionary imprisonment. She was arrested after complying with the summons and presenting herself at the court for the enforcement of her sentence.
Her lawyer requested the court to review the verdict; however, no copy of the Appeal Court ruling was provided. A later request for judicial review was rejected by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds, citing the absence of the appellate court’s written decision in the file.
In subsequent attempts, her lawyer was allowed only to view the ruling at the Revolutionary Court registry without being permitted to take notes, photograph the document, or obtain a copy. This restriction effectively prevented the preparation and filing of further legal appeals.
Mrs. Shahidi Yazdi was arrested on 28 March 2023, at Kerman railway station by agents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence unit and transferred to Kerman Prison.
She was later released on bail set at one billion and 200 million tomans on 2 January 2024, after spending months in pre-trial detention.
The charges brought against her included “propaganda against the regime” and “forming groups or associations with the intent to disrupt national security.”
Her case was heard in August 2025 at the Revolutionary Court of Kerman, where she was sentenced to six years in prison. The verdict was later upheld in full by the Court of Appeal, making the sentence final.
Her brother described her longstanding involvement in children’s education and literacy work. He said she has consistently shown interest in teaching and learning within the field of child education.
He explained that in 2010 she agreed, at the suggestion of a friend, to train a local woman for six months in a village in Bam County to support children’s education, since teachers sent from the provincial capital often discontinued classes due to difficult weather conditions in the region. Before completing the six-month period, in December 2010, she was arrested by IRGC intelligence on charges including “actions against national security” and “propaganda against the regime.” She was initially sentenced to five years in prison at the trial court, but the Kerman Court of Appeal later acquitted her.
He further stated that years later, after the passing of their parents, she moved from Kerman to Karaj and continued private literacy teaching for children. She also formed a WhatsApp group aimed at supporting underprivileged areas around Bam, involving both Bahá’í and Muslim members. The group organized assistance including food, clothing, school supplies, and the construction of bathrooms in four villages for residents lacking basic sanitation facilities. He emphasized that she personally did not travel to these villages and that local residents carried out the activities on the ground.
Authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the enforcement of the sentence.

It was learned on 26 May 2026, that Ms. Sara Sepehri, a Baha’i resident of Shiraz, has remained in detention at Adelabad Prison for more than 47 days without charge, while concerns grow over the deterioration of her physical condition due to lack of access to medical care.
Ms. Sepehri was arrested in April 2026 by security agents at her home in Shiraz. During the operation the agents broke the front door to enter the residence. Her home and the residence of her mother were searched, and several personal and electronic items were confiscated.

That night, the eve of the fifth day of Jamádíyu’l-Avval, in the year 1260 A.H., corresponded with the eve preceding the sixty-fifth day after Naw-Rúz, which was also the eve of the sixth day of Khurdád, of the year Nahang. “This night,” He declared, “this very hour will, in the days to come, be celebrated as one of the greatest and most significant of all festivals. Render thanks to God for having graciously assisted you to attain your heart’s desire, and for having quaffed from the sealed wine of His utterance. ‘Well is it with them that attain thereunto.’” The date of the Manifestation is fixed by the following passage in the Persian Bayán [Váḥid 2, Báb 7): “The beginning thereof was when two hours and eleven minutes [had passed] from the evening preceding the fifth of Jamádíyu’l-Úlá, 1260 [A. Nicolas quotes the following from the Kitábu’l-Ḥaramayn: “In truth, the first day that the Spirit descended in the heart of this Slave was the fifteenth of the month of Rabí‘u’l-Avval.” (A. L. M. Thank you @BBCArabic for highlighting the numerous challenges facing Egyptian Baha'is due to the Egyptian authorities' refusal to document their marriage contracts: "In the event of my husband's death, I will not be able to receive a pension, and if my children need help with their official documents, I cannot prove that I am their mother, in addition to embarrassing situations and endless confusion in official dealings with banks and others."

Between 2017 and 2020, Bahá'í couples filed 43 lawsuits seeking registration of their marriages. Courts accepted the validity of 27 of them. But even favourable rulings have been overturned. In July 2024, a couple whose 1993 marriage was ratified by the courts in 2016 discovered that their renewed ID cards listed them as "single." When they enquired, authorities confirmed that National Security had directed the Civil Status Authority to change the marital status of all Bahá'ís from "married" to "single"—and to suspend the issuance of marriage and family registration documents for Bahá'ís entirely.
Another married couple of 45 years remains listed as "single" on their government documents. The directives came from Egypt’s Ministry of Interior.
