Tarantino turns 61 today. Easily, without debate, he’s one of my favorite directors & writers ever. The thing that will always set Tarantino apart from so many other great directors of the modern era like Spielberg, Scorsese, Nolan, Cameron, etc. is that Tarantino writes all of his films. Consider that one person pulled up a chair, sat down, and wrote each & every character pictured below from scratch. Directing is hard enough- but imagine also writing every word you direct? Obviously, the combination of writing & directing would take a toll on anyone, which might be a huge reason Tarantino claims his next film, while just his 11th, will be his last. I’ve wondered if there’s a world where as Tarantino ages, he would be willing to just direct films that he didn’t personally write or vice versa- where Tarantino just writes & doesn’t direct (i.e True Romance). But I’ve realized I don’t want to consider that world: the Tarantino Experience always has been and will always be both his exceptional writing and outstanding directing. Tarantino’s duality as one of the best screenwriters and one of the best directors alive will always put him in a special stratosphere in Cinema history. If only it never needed to end…
