Gardner & Davis suggest that apps like reQall act as a sort of personal assistant for us when it comes to giving us suggestions on tasks we should complete, people we should call, etc., which is extremely beneficial to us. Below is an image of the reQall app screen. #eme4390S22
In "Are Apps Becoming A Human Crutch", Gardner and Davis suggest that avidly using apps such as @Twitter, @instagram, and @facebook is not ALL that bad, and can lead to the generation of new ideas for ourselves and act as springboards into new experiences. #eme4390S22
In the NYT article "Your Apps Know Where You Were Last Night," it is discussed that apps track our locations, how far we travel to get to a certain location, and even how long we stay at these locations. This makes me reconsider which apps are watching my activity. #eme4390S22
In "Are Apps Becoming a Human Crutch," the authors suggest that we limit our usage of apps such as @instagram, @twitter, and @Snapchat so that they do not begin to control our emotional and spiritual lives outside of our phones. #eme4390S22
"Are Apps a Human Crutch" touches on the fact that many apps now use "predictive search technology" to answer the questions we intend on asking before we can even type the words out onto the search bar. I've experienced this myself and find it to be pretty amazing. #eme4390S22
@GoHART The Hillsborough Area Regional Transportation Authority offers reliable, accessible, and affordable transportation services to all USF students and members of the Tampa Bay community. I highly recommend looking into their services! #iheartHART#eme4390S22
@jacquelyn_doan@GoHART@GoHART is a great service for USF students and other members of the community to utilize when it comes to getting from place to place. It's affordable, reliable, and accessible! I highly recommend everyone looks into their services. #eme4390s22#IHeartHART
@AlexChrsitie It is pretty humbling to realize this. As much as I like to think I don't spend that much of my time on social media, I am still feeding into their unethical practices everytime I login to accounts, scroll through my home page, etc.
@trent_holycross I commented on this as well when watching the documentary! It's no surprise to me that these tech companies are profiting off of our usage, I just never thought to the extent which they do.
@selenavongsalay The idea of having a "digital pacifier" right at our fingertips to give us comfort when we are feeling negative emotions is a little scary honestly. It just proves how wrapped up we are in social media and our online worlds.
@AaronPaolotto I've noticed that even I sometimes get so caught up in what is going on with my socials that I can block out others as well. I guess that's very normal with this generation.
The documentary discusses the concept of persuasive technology, which is essentially what leads to the common unconscious habit which social media users have to keep going back and checking their socials every few minutes. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
Leaders of major tech companies can control the algorithm of their apps with a few button clicks so they can gain exposure in the areas which they would like to, which just proves the power they have over users is unmatched & almost incomprehensible. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
This documentary reflects the concepts of personal data & data mining covered in Module 8, as tech companies have access to monitoring literally everything we do online. Every click we make, every video we watch, and even who's accounts we view most. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
"If you are not paying for the product, you ARE the product" is a quote brought up in this documentary. I believe this further highlights the idea that social media changes us, our thinking, etc. to be a product of the these companies' apps. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
Tristan Harris brings to light in this documentary the idea that technology doesn't HAVE to be addictive. I think this further proves that tech companies truly don't care about how their products and apps effect us, as long as they are profiting. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
This documentary is making me think that as a society, we all need to make efforts to step away from social media, as the hold it has on us is not normal. Tristan Harris says "we have all fallen under some sort of spell" with this, and I agree. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
I like that this film highlights the fact that the younger children are just as affected by social media as older generations when it comes to its link to depression, anxiety, body image issues, etc. If anything, they are more impressionable. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
It's scary to me that these professionals who were once leaders of these many social platforms claim that they left their jobs due to ethical and moral concerns. It validates that idea that we compromise our privacy when we use these apps. #eme4390s22#thesocialdilemma
What amazed me in the podcast regarding Facebook & the 2016 Pres. Election was how many donations Trump received strictly due to his team's smart advertising on the site. $275 million dollars in donations? Future political campaigns should employ this strategy too. #eme4390s22
