Second, the Department of Education was founded in 1979.

Third, since that time over $2 trillion has been appropriated to them.

Fourth, since its founding the Dept of Education has not improved or increased test scores despite 47 years and trillions of dollars.

My father, SSgt Thomas C Bailey of Hartford, CT in Normandy. He went over on a glider the night before D-Day 82 years ago today.

I asked him why he was smiling so hard in this picture. His response, "I was just happy to be alive."

He died December 23, 2023 at 102.

Well Ms Portley: My father was at the Royal Chem Warfare School when all the bases locked down a week before the invasion. He couldnt getvback to his unit. So he actually went over with the Brits. First attempt the tow plane was hit w AA fire and couldnt release so they went back to England. Landed, counted off then boarded another Horsa glider. My dad always joked, "They didnt even give us time to change our underwear." Second attempt they crashed at Pegasus Bridge. My dad was the lone Yank with all those British commandos. Always said they were tremendous fighting men.

No worries. He lived a long, happy and productive life serving others. He became a Catholic Deacon when he retired from Wall St. Ministered to secretly married priests and loved to talk about how many funerals he presided over. And... he was a deeply wonderful father and grandfather. Thank you.

I was at a dinner party on Cape Cod recently and the subject @colbertlateshow last show came up. Now these were well educated (mostly) folks in their 60's. Nearly all retired. Except my wife and I.

What truly horrified me was two of them said, "With Colbert gone, where am I going to get my news?"

I bit my tongue. It still hurts.

@daddyYo2539 Kennedys were notorius for contracting caterers on Cape Cod and then not paying the bill.

They'd tell the companies to tell people you cater for us. Its good advertising.

Around 30 years ago lots of local firms just started demanding payment up front.

@JPReisender @DrHelenFry Absolutely. He was a chem warfare specialist. He was supposed to jump but all his gear weighed about 30lbs more than he did so they stuck him on a glider.
