In the Fever-Mercury matchup, veteran official Angelica Suffren (#7) had a clear view of Alyssa Thomas driving her fist into Caitlin Clark’s neck/throat area during a loose-ball scramble. No whistle. Play continued. Clark later exited with a back injury.

The WNBA reviewed it post-game and issued Thomas a Flagrant Foul 2 + suspension — proving the contact warranted a call in real time.

Officials at this level must get these plays right. Missing flagrant-level fouls in high-stakes games undermines fairness, fan trust, and player safety. Consistent accountability for the crew (starting with the crew chief) is essential as the league grows.
