This morning inside university of Ibadan, at 6:42 am, I saw Purple Heart.

Fun fact: I mentioned time because this flower only opens in the morning. By noon, it dissolves into gel and closes up forever. The next morning, a brand new flower buds again. Isn't that fascinating? 🥹

Fun-er fact: It opens early as an evolutionary survival strategy to outcompete nearby flowers and lock in the morning shift of pollinators, specifically attracting bees that are looking for fresh early-morning nectar to drink before the sun brings heat.

Fun-est fact: and I saw a bee pollinating it this morning 🥹🥹😭. I still can't believe it. I tried to take a clear picture too but it was buzzing. See the third image 🥹

Let's talk about the most famous asexual plant: YAM.

Fun fact about yam: They are asexual because they clone themselves for survival.

When yam plant takes in more energy through photosynthesis than it needs immediately, it uses what it needs at the moment and the remaining energy goes underground to be stored. There it becomes a tuber filled with starch and rich in nutrients and water — this is what we humans call yam and eat.

But yams don't form for humans to eat. They are there for the plant's survival and reproductive strategy.

Here is how:

During the dry season, when there's less rain and the atmospheric conditions become unfavorable for growth, the aboveground yam plant dies. But the underground tuber remains dormant, and since the tuber is a store of nutrients and water, the moment conditions become favorable again, a brand new plant sprouts.

Basically, the plant uses yam to clone itself as a way to survive harsh conditions.

And that's the evolutionary function of yams; to ensure the parent plants can survive.

That means what we humans see as food does not exist for that purpose; rather, it is how plants have protected themselves for millions of years and ensured survival.

We humans are only opportunists who have taken advantage of nature for our own survival too, and if we destroy that nature...well, we can't. We can only destroy ourselves. The evolutionary balance of Earth which has survived for billions of years and even withstood the meteors that wiped out the dinosaurs will always bounce back. Plants will keep planting, trees will keep treeing. It's only humans who will suffer.

Back to yams, how exactly did we humans get yam?

It's during dry season when the plant appears dead but is actually dormant underground; that's when farmers hijack it. They dig the yam out, and Okonkwo became a rich man, even if he was a coward who killed the boy who called him father.

But if farmers already dig out yams, how come yams still grow so much?

You know when you keep a yam in your kitchen for a long time and it starts sprouting? It's because the conditions of your kitchen are right enough to trigger the yam out of dormancy. Remember a yam is just a storage tank waiting for the right conditions to grow again.

That yam sprouting in your kitchen is also why farmers can replant them. The part from which it sprouts is the growth eyes, and that's what farmers cut with small yam and bury into the soil.

Once in the soil, the eyes feed on the small piece of yam because it still contains moisture and nutrients and grows again into the parent plant to make another yam. Farmers hijack again and replant again, and on it goes.

Yam is asexual because it relies on cloning to survive. Same as cassava, potato, banana, onions, etc. We can even argue that these plants are happy to be food because it means we will keep growing them and they will keep surviving and spreading.

So when we humans think we are taking advantage of plants for food...no. Plants are actually using us for their reproductive strategy. And in the words of Yuval Noah Harari, humans didn't domesticate wheat; wheat domesticated humans.

I kept seeing this post on my timeline and wondered why it was trending. I zoomed in to check if they were celebrities. I couldn't recognise them. Just a woman proudly sharing her wedding photos with her husband.

Then I opened the comments and quotes. That was when it made sense.

The hate from some women was so loud. Not subtle or even disguised. Just pure resentment toward a woman who simply chose to start a family.

And it reminded me of something I strongly believe: the moment you decide to build a home, to commit, to create something sacred like family, the kingdom of darkness rises. Why? Because you are attempting something powerful.

Having a family is one of the most meaningful decisions anyone can make. It requires sacrifice, maturity, and vision. Not everyone is ready for it. Not everyone will applaud it. And honestly, not everyone will experience it.

Some women cope by convincing themselves that “marriage is not an achievement.” But deep down, many of them still long for companionship, stability, and legacy. It’s easier to dismiss what you don’t have than to admit you desire it.

The bitterness in those comments and quotes says more about the women than the bride.

To the young ones reading this: life has phases. Ambition is good. Money is good. Success is good. But don’t let the noise of the crowd make you despise what has sustained humanity for generations.

Talk to people who are older and fulfilled. Ask them what truly mattered in the end. Most will mention family long before they mention money, influence or power.

If you see someone building something beautiful, don’t curse it because you haven’t built yours yet. Your time can still come. Growth requires humility.

When drums beat in one courtyard, only the empty hut complains about the noise.
