Meet Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, a Supreme Court Judge but behaves like a left activist.

Quite a record for someone whose job demands judicial restraint:

> Just before the Supreme Court was to hear the issue, he publicly declared that any process disenfranchising millions was arbitrary, unconstitutional and something “no court can condone.” Why publicly pronounce on an issue your own Court is about to hear?

> When 14 youths were arrested over an iftar gathering on a Ganga boat, Justice Bhuyan publicly questioned their arrest and detention and said eating chicken biryani was no offence. The allegations were still part of a live prosecution.

> He publicly attacked the Supreme Court’s own Delhi Metro judgment, saying it had caused the “most extensive damage” to arbitration in India. A sitting SC judge publicly trashing a binding judgment of his own Court.

> In Kejriwal’s bail case, he called the CBI arrest unjustified and brought back the “caged parrot” attack on the agency. AAP immediately used his remarks to attack the government and demand the Home Minister’s resignation.

And the Supreme Court’s own code says judges should stay out of public debate on political and pending judicial matters.

At some point, people are entitled to ask where judicial restraint ends and political activism begins.
