Here is the Research Integrity Risk Index (RI²), developed by Lokman Meho at AUB. RI² is a fresh way to think about institutional publishing practices, shifting focus from volume and citations to research integrity.
Instead of rewarding quantity, it flags structural red flags by combining two key measures
• Rate of retracted articles per 1000 papers
• Proportion of articles in journals delisted from Scopus or Web of Science
Institutions receive a composite score and are categorized across five tiers: Red Flag, High Risk, Watch List, Normal Variation, and Low Risk.
This approach offers more transparency and helps funders, academic leaders and policy makers identify deeper vulnerabilities that traditional metrics miss.
For anyone committed to scholarly excellence this is a must read. The methodology is well documented and open for critique and refinement.
Linking research impact with integrity makes RI² a powerful tool for those of us striving to build trust in science and institutions.
We must integrate this into our #NIRF ranking methodology as negative marking.
