PJAK’s reasoning, meanwhile, is more ambitious and expansive. Rivar Abdanan, PJAK’s spokesperson and an IFC Central Council member, told The Amargi that Iran faces unresolved historical crises, including the Kurdish question.
“The structural and historical issues cannot be resolved without a democratic perspective, a pluralist outlook, and a new theoretical and conceptual framework,” Abdanan said. “Until now, the Iranian opposition either avoided engaging with these issues or lacked the correct approach to resolving them. In some cases, it even contributed to intensifying them.”
For PJAK, the Woman, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadî) movement, which began in 2022, created a renewed opportunity to challenge Iran’s centralist, patriarchal, and single-identity political culture. The IFC, he said, currently represents the peak of the Iranian opposition forces’ “intellectual-political search,” aiming to act as a democratic “small-scale Iran” representing diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural groups.
“Whether it can achieve this goal depends on its performance,” he said. “It cannot be achieved merely through slogans.”
PJAK does not claim that the IFC has already solved the Kurdish question. Rather, it views the congress as a potential arena of political struggle. Abdanan pointed out that if a platform shows “even a minimum commitment” to democratic and pluralist values, and opened space for the Kurdish question and the rights of other oppressed peoples, refusing to engage would amount to political passivity.
PJAK, he said, will continue its participation only if “the political status of the Kurds, as well as their political, cultural-linguistic, economic, and social rights, are recognized.” Abdanan noted that PJAK aims to bring the principles of the Women, Life, Freedom movement into the IFC, transforming it from the inside rather than waiting for it to become ideologically complete before joining.
