Dr Mahrang Baloch and Activists of the BYC could have been the door to a peaceful resolution. Her voice was always for the disappeared, for her father, for those lost. The state has closed an important route to reconciliation.

PAKISTAN: Reacting to the life sentences given by Quetta’s Anti-Terrorism court to Baloch activists Mahrang Baloch and Sibghat Ullah Shah Jee on 22 June, Amnesty International said:
“This verdict, which is an affront to the right to a fair trial, demonstrates how Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws are being cynically misused to silence peaceful dissent. The conviction and sentence followed an expedited secret trial conducted on jail premises, during which serious concerns were raised over international fair trial standards and due process. No direct evidence was presented linking Mahrang and Shah Jee to the alleged violence.”

Veteran Journalists expresses concern sentencing of Mahrang Baloch
The Veteran Journalists has expressed serious concern over the sentences handed down to Dr. @MahrangBaloch_ and Sibghatullah Shah Jee of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), declaring them contrary to the fundamental principles of justice, the right to a fair trial, and constitutional guarantees. Veteran journalists from all major cities stated that Mahrang and Sibghatullah were deprived of their chosen legal representation and that their sentences lack legal authority or justification. Dr. Mahrang Baloch had informed the jail authorities in writing that she did not wish to avail herself of any state-appointed counsel, as her own selected lawyers were available. Despite this, a state counsel was appointed against her explicit wishes.
The veteran journalists emphasised that Pakistan is a signatory to several international treaties that guarantee the rights of prisoners and those who fight for the rights of oppressed communities. Consequently, the sentences given to the Baloch Yakjehti Committee leadership remain open to serious question. During the trial, Dr. Mahrang Baloch raised a formal objection against the presiding judge and submitted a petition to this effect before the court. However, the court refused to place the petition on record. This was subsequently challenged through a constitutional petition, and miscellaneous applications were filed for an urgent hearing.
The veteran journalists expressing these concerns include Hussain Naqi, Farhatullah Babar, , Mustansar Javaid, Anwar Iqbal, Ali Ahmad Khan, Zahid Hussain, Mazhar Abbas, Amir Wasim, Dr. Touseef Ahmed Khan, Nasir Zaidi, Asmatullah Niazi, Munizae Jahangir, Mahnaz Rahman, Sohail Sangi, Nasir Malick, Adnan Rehmat, G.N. Mughal, Waris Raza, Habib Khan Ghori, Fouzia Shahid, Fauzia Kalsoom Rana, Lala Asad, Lala Rehman, Ayub Jan Sarhandi, Shafiq Awan, Abdul Sattar, Mohammed Riaz and Azad Syed.
They noted that the highest court of the province did not accept the request for an urgent hearing, and as a result, the sentences were announced before the pending objections and legal points could be decided.
The veteran journalists position is that when an accused person's objections, their chosen counsel's right of representation, and fundamental questions regarding the transparency of judicial proceedings are under consideration, their timely and effective redressal is indispensable. Justice must not only be done, but must also be seen to be done. These events have collectively undermined public trust in the judicial system and raised serious questions about the delivery of justice.
In light of these irregularities, the veteran journalists demands the immediate suspension of the sentences and calls upon the superior judiciary to institute a transparent, independent inquiry into the procedural lapses of the trial. The journalists demand that the defendants' right to counsel of their choice be fully restored and that all pending constitutional objections be properly adjudicated before any further legal action is taken.
They urge the government to honour its international and constitutional obligations regarding human rights and political expression, rather than suppressing peaceful dissent through judicial means.
Echoing the demands of the Balochistan Bar Council, the forum calls upon the relevant judicial and constitutional forums to conduct an impartial and transparent review of this matter. Senior journalists also demanded a fair trial and speedy justice for imprisoned rights activist and lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha, who were sentenced to 17 years in prison for comments posted on social media. “Five months on, despite repeated attempts by their legal counsel, their appeal has not been heard yet,” they reminded.
Veteran journalists reiterated its unwavering commitment to the supremacy of the Constitution, the independence of the judiciary, the protection of fundamental rights, and the rule of law.
