Poverty couldn’t break her spirit. Today, she’s a Padma Shri awardee and one of India’s finest oncologists.

Born into poverty in a slum in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, with illiterate parents who still dreamed of a better future for their children, Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane rose against all odds to become one of India’s leading oncologists

Her mother, a vegetable seller, sold her mangalsutra to fund her education. Her father, a freedom fighter and mill worker, inspired her dream of becoming a surgeon.

And Dr. Deshmane turned every obstacle into a stepping stone — earning her MBBS, MS, and eventually becoming the first woman professor, dean, HoD, and director at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru.

Even after retirement, she dedicated herself to spreading cancer awareness across rural India.

A true testament that no circumstance can limit a determined spirit. Congratulations, Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane!
