Governors and LGs do not get the scrutiny they deserve.

Education, healthcare and roads things that would greatly improve lives are under their purview.

We need to focus on them, if we want development. We need more subnational focused media & CSOs.

As long as the Land Use Act retains governors as custodians of our land, a power not even the President can contest, no capitalist in this country will ever hold the advantage over a governor. It is a different form of power, and Cersei Lannister settled this argument years ago when Littlefinger told her that knowledge is power. She had her guards seize him, called them off, and then told him, “Power is power.” Everything else is negotiation.

Yahaya Bello shut down the Obajana plant, Dangote’s largest cement facility, just a few years ago, with the state assembly backing him. A plant of that scale sat idle for months and the richest man in Africa had to run to Abuja for cover, pleading for intervention, and the truth is that if Yahaya Bello had set out to play dirty, and with the Land Use Act on his side, it would have been something else entirely.

Only a few months ago, the head of a single regulatory agency got Dangote visibly rattled in public, and that is someone in an appointive position. Now imagine the Governor of Lagos State, where his investments are based, moved against him. Imagine a governor revoking the certificates of occupancy on the land carrying the refinery, the fertiliser plant and the port, citing overriding public interest, which the Act permits. That would be the end of an empire.

Yes, political power ends. So does money. Politicians have buried plenty of billionaires whose names mean nothing to anyone under thirty today. But enough of the worst case scenario. Dangote is an asset of this nation, of the continent, and of the Black race. We should pray that he is never tested by political power, because we already know how that test ends. 😄

Three things every woman needs to hear:
Say these exact words to your doctor: "I am concerned this could be my heart." That sentence changes everything. Don't soften it.
If tests are "normal" but symptoms persist — demand CT angiography or cardiac MRI.
If you had preeclampsia — your cardiac surveillance starts now. Not at 65.
Your heart can break from grief, from stress, from a system that wasn't built to see you.
It can also heal. If someone finally looks.

The revelation yesterday that: A DNA test result confirmed that a previously unidentified body was that of journalist Pelumi Onifade further shows the horrifiying level of violence unleashed on protesters and journalists during #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

Nigerian police attached to the Lagos State Task Force deliberately killed the 20-year-old journalist, Pelumi Onifade on Saturday October 24 2020. His body was later dumped at the mortuary of General Hospital Ikorodu Lagos.

Pelumi Onifade, was a 200-level student of the Department of History, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State. He was an intern with GboahTV - an online television.

Eye witnesses said on that day, while covering one of the scenes of #EndSARS protest alongside other journalists in Ikeja they saw Pelumi sustain gunshot wounds. While in the pool of his own blood and while clearly wearing a press jacket police dragged his body into their van.

The case of Pelumi Onifade is just one of many shocking atrocities committed by Nigeria's security agencies during #EndSARS protests.

Earlier today, Lakurawa members brutalised the son of a district head in Sokoto State after he visited another community. He was punished first for having songs on his phone. Then they were unsatisfied with his response about who the ISSP members were that visited his community and dropped letters. He told them all he knew about their coming and the letter left with his father, but they accused him of lying. He was clubbed so badly that his arm broke and he sustained head injuries.

It was obvious that an informant had alerted Lakurawa about the visitor because, the Lakurawa men, on 20 motorcycles, headed straight to the village head’s palace. They forced the village head to lie face down for not informing them of the man’s arrival, especially as they had been in the village since the previous day.

This is another stark example of life in rural communities with little or no state protection.
