Thank you, Prof. Alemayehu @alemayehuGeda. I was aware of the publication and book launch when a good friend, Ato Ayalew Kebede, traveled to Ethiopia to attend. I first read Dejazmach Kebede’s Ye Tarik Mastawesha at a very young age, and I now look forward to reading his posthumous work.

I only wish that the late Ambassador Dr. Kassa Kebede—someone for whom I had great respect and whom I considered an elder friend—had also published his writings. He played a critical role in the Ethiopian state for more than 30 years, with immense knowledge of diplomacy & geopolitics, security affairs, and politics. His almost photographic memory of the labyrinth of modern Ethiopia’s political history—from the Emperor’s era to the Derg/WPE period—would have been an invaluable contribution.

We need to get this straight. The contract of Assab was a contract for the sale of lands in the area known as Asab to Mr Joseph Sapeto of the Rubattino, Italian Shipping Company on November 15, 1869. The sellers were the Sultan brothers in the area, Hassan-ben-Ahmad and Ibrahim-ben-Ahmad. This was pretty much a transition time, Emperor Tewodros was dead in 1868 and Emperor Yohannis IV come to power. Emperor Menelik II was crowned on November 3, 1889, 20 years after the contract was signed, so I don’t think the statement “the land was sold without the knowledge of Emperor Menelik II” is accurate, at least chronologically. #followers

But who was bidding? Apparently one person bid at 44000 Euros (just below the reserve price) for a looted medal that has been defaced removing the 5 crosses hide its origins! So the medal has not been sold. Hopefully the vendor will do the right thing and return it to #Ethiopia
