You need to know the difference between selective breeding and GMOs. Not every fruit or animal that looks different from their original forms are GMOs. Some are selectively bred to look that way. Read on to know how seedless bananas were bred.

For selective breeding, there's no gene editing in the lab. We just choose specific plants or animals to breed based on their desirable traits.

HOW WE GOT SEEDLESS BANANAS
People in New Guinea began cultivating bananas at least 7,000 years ago. At some point, they noticed plants whose fruit had fewer seeds and more flesh. Those were the ones they kept. This is because some wild bananas already had a genetic tendency toward parthenocarpy, which means their fruit can swell and develop without pollination or seed formation. With time, the bananas were having less and less seed. When they didn't have seeds again, they turned to propagation through suckers.

Also, people carried bananas between islands and regions. This caused the hybridization of different subspecies, leading to triploid plants, instead of diploid. A triploid plant will of course be sterile.

So, no genetic engineering of any sort happened. It was all natural.
