While engaged in unprecedented (by post-Cold War standards) nuke arsenal enhancements, competition, and arms control dismantlement, the nuke states managed to water down and eventually prevent final consensus declaration at Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference.
High Level Conference on Humanity in War to convene in Jordan on 7 December 2026.
Compliance w/ international humanitarian law and preserving a minimum of humanity in war must be a political priority of states if they want these wars to end & their societies to recover.
We thank @WFUNA, MS, Civil Society and other candidates for the debate on #UNSCElections 2026 🇺🇳
We remain a strong supporter of int‘l law & the UN Charter, and we will continue to listen if elected to Security Council.
3 June - 🇦🇹 counts on you.

Another story revealing a missile accident risk.
We can imagine every possible risk-reduction measure but they will only ever “reduce” risks never eliminate them
Solution remains: fully implement the #NPT strengthen it with the #TPNW and bring the #CTBT into force = real security
"We cannot afford to be so naive as to believe that an academic theory called #nucleardeterrence will keep us safe from these weapons of mass destuction."
On day 2 of the #NPT Rev Con, ICAN's Head of Policy @azakre reminds us of the urgency to end nuclear weapons. #NuclearBan
Is nuclear deterrence now a new pillar in the NPT? What happened with the disarmamant pillar? And frankly, what does the German foreign minister will happen with the non-proliferation pillar when this is the message coming from European states?
Most nations in Asia and the Pacific want to see urgent global action to eliminate nuclear weapons. That’s why more than 20 of them met in Jakarta to discuss regional and global efforts to implement the landmark UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
@NATO statement to the #NPT2026 RevCon says:
"Allies reject any attempt to delegitimise nuclear deterrence", while criticising the buildup and modernisation in countries outside the alliance. It's a double standard that you will not get away with. Either the rules apply, or not.
Swedish Air Force says it intercepted two Russian Tu-22M3 intermediate-range (not “strategic”) bombers over the Baltic today. One photo shows a nuclear-capable Kh-32 air-to-surface missile under the belly of one of the bombers.
The rise in deployed nuclear warheads raises risks of escalation, miscalculation & accidents. Most states push for disarmament, but some deepen reliance on nukes.

Delighted that Somalia’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol have entered into force today, the legal basis for nuclear verification by @IAEAorg.
I thank @MOFASomalia’s Foreign Minister @AbdisalamDhaay for this important step, reaffirming 🇸🇴’s commitment to non-proliferation. This brings us closer to the universalization of the CSA as required by the NPT, key to trust and confidence in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
I think it’s interesting that people are so shocked by the idea of “normalizing the language of nuclear annihilation”.
This was what nuclear deterrence always is. Any state (& person) that supports nuclear deterrence as a policy must be ready to wipe out a whole civilization
Not trying to be all hippie but just thinking logically about energy security, feels like an easy choice to invest a bit more in some solar, wind and water to protect ourselves from an increasingly unstable world?

I join the @iaeaorg in raising the alarm again over the safety of nuclear facilities in #Iran.
The latest incident involving the Bushehr nuclear power plant is a stark reminder: a strike could trigger a nuclear accident, with health impacts that would devastate generations.
With every passing day of this escalating conflict, the stakes and threats are raised higher and higher. We must de-escalate now. Peace is the best medicine.
Secretaries-General of the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish Red Cross Societies explain why withdrawing from the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention would not enhance security but endanger civilians with the indiscriminate effects of these weapons.
