BTS’s biggest US hit this year would have been excluded from the Grammy category built to celebrate Asian artists like them.
“Swim,” the lead single from their album Arirang, hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, sung mostly in English. The Recording Academy’s new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, introduced in June alongside four other new awards, requires meaningful use of one or more Asian languages, defined in the rulebook as playing a significant role within bilingual or multilingual song structures. A song succeeding specifically because of its crossover English appeal doesn’t qualify for the category created to recognize Asian pop music.
That’s the contradiction sitting underneath BTS’s decision. All seven members posted an identical statement to Instagram declining to submit any music for the 2027 Grammys, saying they hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than divided by region or language. The group was a legitimate frontrunner for major categories, including Album of the Year, on the strength of Arirang’s chart performance. Choosing to sit out entirely, rather than simply skip the new category, is a rejection of the framework itself, not just a snub of one award.
Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. responded that he was saddened but understood and respected the decision, framing the new category as recognition of Asian pop music’s growth rather than a constraint on it. That framing runs directly into the “Swim” problem. A category meant to elevate Asian artists ends up measuring them by linguistic criteria that penalizes the exact kind of crossover success that made BTS a global act in the first place.
BTS closes out European tour dates and returns to MetLife Stadium for the next leg of World Tour Arirang starting August 1, the same venue where they performed at this month’s World Cup final halftime show, the first in the tournament’s 96 year history. The Grammy decision doesn’t touch any of that. It’s specifically an answer to how the Recording Academy chose to define them.

🐨진 형이 전역했을 때 쯤 이제 저희가 다 전역하기 1년 전이죠 그때 막 다들 멘탈이 안 좋았어요 그래서 진 형이 전역했을 때 제가 색소폰 불었을 때 진 형이 전역해서 아마 지민이 집이였나 저희 집이였나? 지민이 집이였던 것 같아요 다같이 모여서 그때 정국이도 막 힘들어하던 때라 저희 다 힘들어 하던 때죠 일병이니까 펑펑 울면서 뭐 형이 이렇게 팀을 좀 더 이렇게 열심히 잡아줘야된다 그런 얘기도 하고 막 저희끼리 그때 되게 여러가지 일을 해서 “그래 그러면 우리가 기다리는 만큼 돌아오자마자 무언가 이제 앨범을 만들고 기다려주시는 분들에 그런거에 보답을 하자!” 라고 그때 이제 되게 약간 간략하게 정했었던 것 같아요 그러고 이제 멤버들에 전역이 다 6월로 몰려져있고 타이밍이 맞으면서 이제 그 해 연말부터 아마 송캠프 셋팅을 했던것 같은데..

We had... we literally had no room so, we had to, like, fix our make up in the hallway. So when the stars maybe just passed by we were like"oh, hey I am sorry"/"we are sorry", but last night we used the biggest room. And everyone - every legend, every staff they were so nice and kind to us. And we know it's because of you guys. And yeah, it was really strange to experience it last night... I just wanna say this - you know, it's all thanks to you and we'll never forget the night we had at the AMAs. I love you.
