Lesson 5: Attitude and Talent
From my experience, Talent matters, but attitude matters more.
You need talent to succeed. Technical skills, analytical ability, communication skills, commercial awareness, and all the other capabilities we spend years building absolutely matter.
But attitude matters too.
By attitude, I mean how you approach work and people. Your willingness to learn, openness to feedback, sense of ownership, ability to stay positive under pressure, respect for others, accountability and work ethic etc.
But talent alone does not guarantee success.
I've seen very talented people underperform or struggle in teams because of poor attitude.
On the other hand, a good attitude does not automatically guarantee success either. However, a bad attitude almost guarantees failure.
Leaders want people with both talent and attitude.
But if they had to choose between a moderately talented person with a great attitude and a highly talented person with a poor attitude, I know which one most leaders would rather work with.
Talent is not contagious. Attitude is.
One person with a poor attitude can affect an entire team.
One person who constantly complains, resists feedback, creates excuses, avoids accountability, or brings negative energy can do more damage than a skill gap ever will.
Skill can be taught. Experience can be gained.
Attitude is much harder to fix.
In fact, most times, you can get a fairly good sense of someone's attitude within the first few weeks of working with them.
Over the years, I've found it useful to think about people in four categories (as shown in the pics)
The best teams are not built on talent alone.
They are built on people who are capable, coachable, accountable, dependable, and positive.
Never underestimate the power of attitude.
A lot of team can survive a talent gap. It rarely survives an attitude problem.
Your talent may get you noticed. Your attitude determines how far people are willing to go with you.
Be intentional about the attitude you are building and displaying at work

PROJECT MANAGEMENT, HOW TO MANAGE A CONSTRUCTION SITE PROPERLY
Many people think site management is just standing on site with helmet and shouting at workers.
No.
Real project management is deeper than that.
A poorly managed site can waste millions within few weeks.
Even with enough money, bad management can delay project, reduce quality, create conflicts, and damage reputation.
That is why site management is one of the most important parts of construction.
Now letโs talk about how to manage a construction site properly ๐
First of allโฆ
PLAN BEFORE WORK STARTS.
One major mistake on many sites is starting without proper planning.
Before mobilization, you should already understand:
- Scope of work
- Project timeline
- Budget
- Drawings
- Material requirements
- Labor needs
Because confusion on site usually starts from poor preparation.
A good site manager does not wake up and start improvising every day.
Second ๐
UNDERSTAND THE DRAWINGS.
If you cannot read:
- Architectural drawings
- Structural drawings
- Service drawings
โฆsite management will frustrate you.
Because workers will constantly ask questions.
And if you are not careful, wrong construction can happen from simple misunderstanding.
Third ๐
CONTROL MATERIALS PROPERLY.
This one is very important.
Many projects lose money through:
- Material theft
- Waste
- Poor storage
- Wrong estimation
Cement can disappear silently.
Iron rods can reduce mysteriously.
Diesel can finish without explanation.
That is why proper documentation and monitoring are necessary.
A good project manager tracks:
- Incoming materials
- Usage rate
- Remaining balance
Because site money leaks faster than many people think.
Fourth ๐
MANAGE WORKERS WELL.
Construction workers are humans, not robots.
Your communication matters.
Learn how to:
- Give clear instructions
- Correct mistakes professionally
- Maintain discipline
- Avoid unnecessary insults
- Coordinate different artisans
Because poor communication can slow down site productivity.
Fifth ๐
PRIORITIZE SAFETY.
Never joke with safety on site.
Use:
- Safety boots
- Helmets
- Gloves
- Reflective jackets
One accident can stop project progress completely.
Good project management includes protecting lives, not only completing structures.
Sixth ๐
MONITOR QUALITY CONSTANTLY.
Do not assume workers are always doing things correctly.
Inspect:
- Reinforcement placement
- Concrete mixing
- Block alignment
- Levels
- Dimensions
Because correcting mistakes after completion is more expensive than preventing them early.
Seventh ๐
KEEP DAILY RECORDS.
A professional site manager documents activities.
Record:
- Attendance
- Materials delivered
- Work completed
- Problems encountered
- Weather condition
Because construction disputes can happen anytime.
Documentation protects both client and contractor.
And finally ๐
LEARN TO SOLVE PROBLEMS CALMLY.
Site pressure is real.
There will be:
- Delays
- Material shortage
- Worker issues
- Client complaints
- Unexpected changes
But strong project managers do not panic easily.
They think, adjust, coordinate, and move forward.
Because construction management is not only about building structuresโฆ
It is about managing:
People,
Time,
Money,
Materials,
Pressure,
and Decisions all at once.
And honestlyโฆ
A well managed site is already halfway to successful project completion.
