The average Ghanaian should not treat the Ghana Stock Exchange as a casino or a patriotic duty. The case for owning a slice of it is more ordinary than that: it is one of the few legal, local ways to put cedis into real businesses instead of leaving them to inflation, T-bills, or land that cannot be sold in a week.
What the market actually is. The GSE is a short list of companies—telecom and mobile money, banks, oil marketers, brewers and consumer goods, oil-palm and a few miners. A typical portfolio on this exchange is not “Ghana’s whole economy.” It is MTN, a cluster of banks, and a thinner layer of consumer and energy names. That concentration is a risk. It is also the point: those firms sit on the cash flows that Ghanaians already use every day—airtime, MoMo, deposits, fuel, soap, beer, cooking oil.
Why that can matter for a household. After the debt restructuring, the country has been trying to live with lower inflation and lower policy rates. When inflation is high, cash and many bank balances lose purchasing power. When rates fall from crisis levels, the easy 20-percent-plus T-bill world fades. Equities are the asset class that can, over long stretches, grow with earnings and pay dividends in cedis. MTN and several banks and oil marketers have been among the more consistent dividend payers; banks that were wrecked by the domestic debt exchange have been recapitalizing and re-rating as the sovereign story improved. None of that guarantees the next five years. It does mean the market is no longer only a distressed-credit story.
What “average” participation actually looks like. Most people should not be day-trading CalBank or chasing a thin name that doubled on no volume. The practical route is a licensed broker or a collective investment scheme / mutual fund that already holds GSE stocks, funded with money that is not rent, school fees, or the emergency buffer. Tick sizes are small enough that you do not need a large lump sum to buy a few shares of the liquid names. Liquidity is the constraint: outside MTN and a few banks, getting in and out at a fair price can be slow.
The honest downsides. The exchange is small. One company’s results can move the whole index. The cedi can give back equity gains in dollar terms. Politics, energy-sector holes, and cocoa-board finances can still hit the fiscal story that underpins bank stocks. The 202223 debt exchange showed that “government paper is safe” was a fiction for bondholders; equities can fall further and stay down longer. Past 50–80 percent index years are not a forecast.
The reason that still stands. If the only local stores of value an ordinary household uses are a current account, T-bills, and a plot of land, the GSE is the missing piece: a claim on profits of firms that collect fees and sell goods inside Ghana, priced in cedis, with dividends that can be reinvested. Used as a small, long-held slice of savings—not as a substitute for an emergency fund—it is how an average investor participates in the same recovery the banks and MTN already priced in. That is a case for ownership with eyes open, not a recommendation to buy any particular stock.
@_i_am_Curtis@kwadwosheldon Is this the brother of Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, who was the minister of sports during the Brazil 2014 World Cup?? Ghana 🇬🇭 our beloved country!!!
We are so disorderly to the point where disorder is now the order. When you complain about the disorder and attempt to introduce order, you will be branded as creating disorder.
The average Ghanaian has accepted nonfunctional state institutions. And when people complain about it….we brand them as too known. @SaddickAdams I hope you find your stuff. 🤞 Good luck trying to find your stuff.
Mistakenly left my item at an International Airport in the UAE.
Sent the airport a message at 1:45am UAE time the next day. They responded at 2:05 UAE time.
24 hours later, I received message that item was found and deposited at lost and found office. They gave an option of me picking it if I’m in still in the UAE or they deliver to my City free of charge. Chose the latter option.
NB: Lost item on the 31st August.
I emailed them on 1st Sept. It was found on 1st Sept.
Dispatched to Accra on 2nd Sept.
Arrived on 3rd Sept. UAE closed their case. 48 hours.
Today is 7th Sept.
I had to physically beg someone I know at Accra Airport office to go and confirm if item had arrived.
It had arrived. Why have I not been emailed?

What do you know about the reasons cited by the doctors for not showing up to post? I can give you one true life example: a doctor was posted to Cape Coast. The hospital DOES NOT have accommodation for him. So he goes into the community to look for housing. The landlords are asking for 2 yrs advance which he cannot afford at that time. Your statement of ‘aren’t Ghanaians living there’ is true. Ghanaians are living there but not that Dr. Housing is one of the many reasons. Other issues include the separation from family who may not be able to accompany them to these posts. You can’t sacrifice your marriage on the altar of serving mother Ghana 🇬🇭. Mr Akandoh should continue giving ultimatums as if they are his children.
