Then Covid19 hit and it closed. Now reopened as Iconic Plaza Hotel.

If you had a blank cheque to spend on media in Africa taking into account both the young demographics, online and offline (still huge) and need for content diversity, what would you build?
Harley Berry Limited, a supplier to Kenya Power, has lost a KES 317.9M VAT dispute after the Tax Appeals Tribunal upheld KRA’s assessment for 2022–2024:
—The Tribunal found that Harley Berry failed to provide supporting invoices, supplier confirmations or bank statements, and did not file a single document required under Section 17(3) of the VAT Act to substantiate its input VAT claims.
—Harley Berry was previously awarded a KES 2.9B Kenya Power contract for 320,800 smart meters in 2023, a deal that later drew parliamentary and Senate scrutiny, although the inquiries did not establish corruption or irregularity against the company.

Citigroup staffer felt demoted when posted to Kenya from North America. 2 branches only. Few years later I asked how's been. Apart from many things, it's the unexpected scale of transactions and businesses they handle here. He clearly said Kenya economy is underated & much bigger

Charlie Robertson, Equity Group’s Chief Economic Advisor, had only five minutes to speak about East African markets at yesterday’s H1 2026 Investor Briefing.
He ended up speaking for more than 10 minutes, with the room hanging on his every word.
Here are some of his key insights:
1. Within a few months, Uganda is expected to be exporting as much oil per capita as Nigeria. The country will probably record 10% calendar-year growth next year.
2. Rwanda is seeing a boom in construction, real estate, and airports, with growth of 10% in Q1 2026.
3. Tanzania is undergoing economic reforms, with Eurobonds on the way, debt being issued to foreign investors, and electricity transmission opening up to multiple competitors.

Walter owns an asset management firm and insurance companies. He uses premiums at his insurance companies to make loans to companies he owns. This is usually OK, but you can't do it too often, and you have to disclose it. Walter did it a lot and didn't disclose it. Now he is trying to unwind deals to pay back the loans because the DOJ is investigating him. The Lakers deal gets him a good chunk of the money, but he likely needs another few billion by year-end. He can either raise money privately — Bloomberg says he is trying to do that by offering double-digit yields and using his personal stake in his asset management firm as collateral — or sell off assets to make up the difference. It's tough to tell what will happen, but I think every option is on the table, including selling the Dodgers, Chelsea, Sparks, PWHL, and his motorsports investments across NASCAR, IndyCar, and F1.
