In 1926, Henry Ford officially introduced the five day, forty hour workweek at Ford Motor Company. At the time, most industrial workers labored six days a week, often ten or more hours per day. Ford’s decision was not rooted in altruism alone. It was a calculated economic strategy.
Ford believed that workers with more free time would become better consumers. Leisure created demand. People who were not exhausted every day would travel more, buy more clothes, eat out more often, and most importantly, purchase cars. A workforce with disposable income and time off fueled the very consumer economy Ford depended on.
The policy also improved productivity. Shorter hours reduced fatigue, injuries, and turnover on the assembly line. Ford had already shocked the industrial world in 1914 by doubling wages to five dollars a day to stabilize his workforce. The five day week followed the same logic. Retain skilled workers, keep production steady, and expand the market.
Ford publicly framed the change as a natural evolution of modern industry. Machines were becoming more efficient, so human labor no longer needed to be stretched to its physical limits. By giving workers weekends, Ford helped normalize a standard that would eventually spread across American industry and shape modern work life.
When Ford announced the five day workweek, some competitors predicted economic disaster. Instead, Ford Motor Company saw profits rise, and within a decade the five day week became the standard across much of the industrialized world.

@WeNeedComms@MattMorseTV@SouthPark Shit is trash... Trump does enough funny things you don't have to go this far off the deep end to make a joke about him.
@DannyByGaslight@_iamblakeley@hasanthehun Damn not even a bot account... People throw their morals away so quickly. The shock collars have a vibration function. Dogs don't yelp over a vibration you 🤡
@quipalco @TJ_Banfield @BuffaloKL I get it bro... The bills have their window but the chiefs keep beating them when it matters most. You're terrified you'll go through Allen's while career without a ring. That would really suck but if it makes you so angry maybe you should find another hobby. Cheers psycho!
@TJ_Banfield @BuffaloKL People hating on the chiefs over calls is hilarious. The horrible referees that have been horrible for years really appreciate the distraction.
@HurtsyIvania The kid wanted to get punched in the face. Are you stupid? To other young men coming into money. Don't listen to this idiot! Ignore people that say awful shit to you! Being a true man is one who can control his emotions in tense situations.
Imagine thinking a person struggling to pay for food and whose kid had a drug overdose and died gives one half of a crap about who Queen Latifah supports — my God
Kamala Harris's campaign ended with at least $20 million in debt, per two sources familiar. Harris raised over $1 billion and had $118 million in the bank as of Oct. 16.
