Woke up to the most beautiful review of my writing. Iโm a little bit losing my mind sorting through the past few years of my life; trying to shape all the lessons into words for you.
I am also newly rediscovering my voice: I was not allowed to blog while I worked with the @UN.
In a recent Twitter (X) exchange, some young academics called me out for being โjust a ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฃ-๐ฅ๐ง๐ค๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐๐๐ง, and not a โ๐ง๐๐๐ก ๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ฃ๐๐ช๐งโ.
For my MBA studies this semester, we focused on @OpenAI as a businessโa non-profit in the tech industry valued at ๐ฆ๐ด๐ต $300 ๐ฝ๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ค๐ฃ, that is changing literally every aspect of our very world as we know it.
Now just so we are clear; my journey building @DS4Africa (๐ข๐ญ๐ด๐ฐ ๐ข ๐ต๐ฆ๐ค๐ฉ ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ฏ-๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง๐ช๐ต) has not been anywhere nearly as successful (๐ ๐ข๐ด๐ฑ๐ช๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ, ๐ด๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ข๐บ). My (๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ฏ-๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ง๐ช๐ต) company @KwathuKonnect (one of my 4 or 6 companies, depends on how you understand regional integration) has several ventures under it; but in this moment I want to focus on DSA.
We have with DSA raised only est $400,000 to this day, and mostly from international development partners (๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐ค๐ง๐จ), and have trained just about 10,000 from 20+ countries in various tech, innovation, and business development skills.
To me, building #DigitalSkillsforAfrica has been a bigger success than I ever imagined. My very initial dream in 2019 was JUST to ๐ต๐ณ๐ข๐ช๐ฏ ๐ข ๐ง๐ฆ๐ธ ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ข๐ณ๐ฏ โ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐ก๐ค๐โ as I was a thriving ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ฉ๐ค๐ช๐ง๐๐จ๐ข ๐๐ก๐ค๐๐๐๐ง then.
Iโve, over the years, found myself training ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ and ๐๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ graduates from notable universities in Africa and newly, ๐๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด students from the US. Iโve been a part of SO MANY international fellowships, and travelled to nearly 20 countries JUST learning about entrepreneurship.
Iโve delivered endless keynotes at conferences; and actually used my work with @DS4Africa to secure most of the jobs I have had since its inception. One would perhaps even have reason to argue that while the business may not have thrived, I did.
And nowโwith what I know as a professional in the global (international) space and an academic with a ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฟ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฝ (๐๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ด๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ) and presently pursuing a ๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ (๐๐ถ๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด ๐๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต), and though the business continues to operate (๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ช๐ต ๐ธ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ), I know that DSA is a systemic failure: an unviable business.
As an Evaluator (ex-@UNDP_Evaluation) and a writer, it is always in my interest to reflect: https://t.co/wGMAPKdg7S
Easily one of the experiences I've started to look forward toโexcited to join (for the second time) the @MichiganStateU Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation this evening as a mentor at #2DayVenture.
I quite deeply enjoyed mentoring last semesterโwith two of the teams I had mentored making to the top 3, and my personal favourite actually winning the competition.
Full disclosure: I took interest in 2DV because of the work we have been doing with @Bants2Business over the past 4 years, and I still have plans to revamp and scale that network. I consider this great learning for me, and I am quite keen to see what ideas the 2DV teams will come up with this time around. #GoGreen #SpartansWill
