On this day in 1959, ex-Red Phil Bratley passed away aged 78. He played for the Reds from 1910-14 and played every game in the 1912 FA Cup run when the Reds won the cup. Indeed he headed the winner in the semi-final replay against Swindon. On this day in 2005, Barnsley signed free agent Brian Howard on a 2 year contract. He had left #SwindonTown where financial problems meant he’d been offered a contract on reduced terms. He missed the first two months of the season with a broken bone in a foot, sustained whilst playing for Swindon but then became a vital member of the promotion-winning team alongside Stephen McPhail in midfield. On this day in 1961, David Barber signed for Preston North End for a fee of £20,000. Barber was a former England Youth team captain, playing 8 times prior to becoming an apprentice at Oakwell and signing professional forms in June 1958. He became a first team regular in 1959/60 and the following season was selected for the England U23 team that beat Denmark 5-1 at Maine Road, Manchester. On this day in 1969, The Green ‘Un reported that Barnsley FC was to have a new trophy – The Boylin Trophy, awarded to the Player of the Year at the club. At the Football League AGM on this day in 1911, Barnsley who finished 19th and Lincoln City (20th) of Div 2 sought re-election to the League. Barnsley Chairman Alderman John Rose, presented a case for why the club should be re-elected, explaining the team had been affected by accidents and illness during the season. He also reminded them Barnsley had reached the FA Cup Final the previous season. In the subsequent vote Barnsley received 28 votes, Grimsby Town 18, Lincoln City 17, Darlington 6, Chesterfield Town 6, Hartlepool United 1 and Rochdale 1. Barnsley were therefore re-elected and Grimsby, who failed to gain re-election in 1910, replaced Lincoln City. #BarnsleyFC #GrimsbyTown
