"I think of our excursions on the lake. How we saw him when he came down to us, or welcomed our arrival, with a good-humoured smile. How vividly does each verse of his poem recall some scene of this kind to my memory."
Mary Shelley on reading Byron's Childe Harold III, 1817
I saw thee smile upon another;
If not a lover or a brother –
Or both (thus to unite in both
A Lover’s best and worst in guiltiest growth) –
He had no business there to be –
Thy smiles to him were snakes to me!
(Teresa's note to B - "Come, I'll wait for you – you promised me")
Byron to Mother, 1810: I write at anchor off the Troad - all the remains of Troy are the tombs of her destroyers, amongst which I see that of Antilochus from my cabin window. These are huge mounds of earth like the barrows of the Danes in your Island.

Byron to Augusta, from Ravenna, 1819: I have my saddle-horses here – I am very fond of riding and always was out of England – but I hate your Hyde Park and your turnpike roads – & must have forests – downs – or deserts to expatiate in – I detest knowing the road one is to go.
Byron to Moore, 1814: Newstead is to be mine again. Claughton forfeits twenty-five thousand pounds; but that don’t prevent me from being very prettily ruined. I mean to bury myself there—and let my beard grow—and hate you all.

Byron to Murray, 1820: Pray send me no more poetry but what is rare and decidedly good - there is such a trash of Keats' and the like upon my tables that I am ashamed to look at them.
"June 1.— Breakfasted with Shelley; entered a caleche; took Necker’s house for 100 louis for 8 or 365 days. Saw several houses for Shelley; one good. Dined; went in the boat; all tea’d together."
