What makes a great #neurosurgeon? We set out to answer this question with season four of Barrow Neurosurgery Base Camp. Today, we're bringing you our 10th "trait of greatness" with the season finale: "On Tenacity."
“I think I’ve always just called myself stubborn,” said Anna Huguenard, MD, who trained at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute as a cerebrovascular and skull base fellow. “Whether you call that stubbornness or tenacity, that willingness to just keep coming back is so important to actually becoming a master.”
In the season finale, Barrow #neurosurgery faculty and trainees share personal stories of unwavering determination and reflect on what drives them to keep going—even on the most challenging days.
You’ll also get to hear from the following special guests:
-Fred G. Barker II, MD, Director of Cranial Base Surgery, @MassGeneralNews
-Richard G. Ellenbogen, MD, FACS, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, @UWMedicine
-Kevin T. Foley, MD, Chair, @SemmesMurphey Clinic
-@AdamArthurMD, Neurosurgeon, Semmes Murphey Clinic; Chief Medical Officer, @Medtronic
-@DanielYoshor, MD, Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, @PennMedicine

Neuroanatomy teaser: This patient presents w/atypical face pain unresponsive to microvascular decompression & C1 spinal cord stimulator. Weird!? Turns out a cuneate medullary cavernoma was triggering spinal trigeminal nucleus on its descent to C3 & its resection cured her…

June is #MyastheniaGravisAwarenessMonth.
Myasthenia gravis is a rare #autoimmune disease that causes fluctuating fatigue and weakness in voluntary muscles, like those in the face, neck, throat, diaphragm, and limbs. It happens when the body’s immune system creates antibodies that disrupt communication between nerves and muscles, making it difficult for muscles to contract.
Symptoms may include drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and trouble lifting objects. Although there is no cure for #myastheniagravis, treatments can help relieve symptoms and, in some cases, lead to remission.

Congratulations to #neurosurgeryresident Sarah Sternbach, MD, and her collaborators in the Neurocritical Care Program at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute on receiving the Natus Resident/Fellow Award for Neurocritical Care at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Meeting (#AANS2026)!
@AANSNeuro presents this award to the best #neurocriticalcare abstract submitted by a resident or fellow. Dr. Sternbach performed this research with pharmacy specialist Tyler Haller, PharmD, BCCCP, and acute care nurse practitioner Diane McLaughlin, DNP, AGACNP-BC, CCRN, FCCM, FNCS, MBA. She credits them with conceiving the project and welcoming her participation.
The team performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with acute #braininjuries. These patients had dangerously high blood pressure despite receiving maximal doses of nicardipine and thus were switched from the first-line medication to another agent, known as clevidipine.
Drs. Sternbach, Haller, and McLaughlin found that nearly 85% of these patients achieved blood pressure control within one hour of starting clevidipine and that side effects were rare. Their study suggests that clevidipine is a safe and an effective rescue option for one of the most challenging problems in neurocritically ill patients.
Outstanding Chief Resident talks by Dr. Rudy and Dr. Pacult.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, lessons learned, and perspectives on training, leadership, and life beyond residency. @BarrowNeuro

In observance of #BrainTumorAwarenessMonth (#BTAM), members of the @IvyBrainTumCtr team at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute joined @AZFamily to discuss the topic.
Kelly Braun, MD, a #neurooncologist at Barrow, shared how her own journey with a #braintumor inspired her career choice. She also explained why brain tumors can be difficult to treat and how the #IvyBrainTumorCenter is working to address these challenges.
Shwetal Mehta, PhD, (@smehtalab) the Ina Levine Chair for #BrainTumorResearch at Barrow and the deputy director of the Ivy Center, discussed how the Ivy Center's Phase 0 #clinicaltrials work and why philanthropy is key to making progress in brain tumor treatments.

Sometimes in this job, life hangs in the balance & you must act on intuition, w/out the usual studies confirming your diagnosis. Here, fistulous connections b/w meningeal arteries & a cortical vein produced hypertension, venous dilation, rupture. DAVFs can be treated endovascularly, but hemorrhage often requires emergency surgery to close the fistula, evacuate clot, save a life….
Congratulations to Barrow President & CEO @mtlawton, MD, on recently being named as one of the "Five #Neurosurgeons to Know" by @BeckersSpine for his innovative contributions to #neurosurgical treatment, research, and education. View the list at https://t.co/Xb1uUDzUYo.
