Sergeant Creed was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor (2d Oak Leaf Cluster) for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force on 17 November 1965 in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Creed was cited for valor for being instrumental in repelling numerous attacks of an estimated North Vietnamese battalion while engaged in close heavy fighting in the IA Drang Valley. Sergeant Creed repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire until he was mortally wounded. He died along with 155 troopers of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division in the tall green grass of the Ia Drang Valley.
