Police probe suspected mass grave in Kericho
Police in Kericho have launched investigations after the discovery of a suspected mass grave at Makaburini public cemetery in Kericho East.
According to a police report filed at Kericho Police Station, officers visited the scene after members of the public raised the alarm over a fresh grave within the cemetery.
Two men from the Makaburini area, who said they work as casual grave diggers, told investigators they were hired to dig a large grave after a white Land Cruiser allegedly arrived at the cemetery with three occupants. They claimed that about 14 bodies, some reportedly mutilated and all said to have been in body bags, were buried in a single grave on the morning of March 20, 2026.
Police say the men also linked the incident to a cemetery caretaker identified only as Ezekiel, who is now being sought for questioning.
The scene was visited by the DCIO Kericho, scenes of crime personnel, and officers from Kericho Police Station. Police said investigations are underway and that exhumation orders will be sought on March 23, 2026.
