This week, we acquired this salt ship, thought to have been made by a Cheshire salt boiler in the 19th century. It is constructed from wood and string and was dipped in brine, forming salt crystals as it dried. The craft likely evolved as folk art amongst local salt workers.
Our students have been investigating an area to the east of the chapel. We found a spread of medieval demolition which has produced building material, floor tile fragments, glass, pottery, and even a rim fragment from a Roman hammerhead mortarium! #archaeology#roman#poulton
More finds from the Grosvenor Park dig. In 2021 a piece of medieval grave slab with a beautiful foliage design was found. This year several fragments of a similar stone were found amongst stones used to make a drain. One piece has lettering. Only two days to find some more!
