January 2009, the National Mall looked exactly like what the people in charge thought of the country they just took over. 1.8 million people showed up, partied, and then walked away leaving 130 tons of garbage ... bottles, wrappers, newspapers, and American flags ... scattered across the grass like trash. They didn’t just litter. They desecrated the center of the capital and left it for someone else to clean up. That was the statement.

Eight months later a different group came to the same ground. They brought their own bags. They stayed and cleaned. They didn’t treat the Mall like a dump they were entitled to walk away from. One side respects nothing. The other still remembers what basic decency looks like.

Now they’re finally draining the reflecting pool that Obama turned into a brackish, algae-infested swamp on purpose. They’re putting real water back in it for the first time since 1922. The grass that was left to die and rot for seventy or eighty years because nobody in charge gave a shit is being ripped out and replaced with grass that’s actually alive. Parks that were turned into open-air homeless encampments and drug markets are being cleared so normal people can use them again without stepping over human waste and needles.

Restaurants that were driven out are coming back because the city no longer feels like it’s being intentionally run into the ground.

This wasn’t neglect. It was a choice. They wanted public spaces ugly, depressing, and degraded. They wanted the capital to feel like a place normal people should avoid. They got exactly what they wanted until someone finally came in and started ripping that filth out by the roots.

The water is flowing back in. Watch what happens when you stop pretending decay is compassionate.
