Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir's bellicose remarks about Christians are indefensible. No doubt, some Christian clergymen made similar or even more incendiary comments, but this does not absolve Jingir. Two wrongs do not make a right.

His oft-repeated praise of the so-called Muslim-Muslim ticket has caused many Muslims, including me, sheer embarrassment. I wish I could de-platform him to stop feeding Islamophobes what they want.

Democracy and religion are two distinct things. Someone should whisper this into the Sheikh's ear. The "Muslim-Muslim" leaders he extols do not use the Shariah and cannot use it to rule Nigeria. They use the constitution. So, their religious identity is essentially immaterial.

Good leadership is more about justice than faith. It is about the leaders' competence, not their creed. It is also for all subjects, regardless of belief or lack of it, rather than for a particular group.

Our numerical "strength" does not help us solve the problems bedevilling the North. Sentiment aside, what are we doing better than the South today? I can only think of agriculture, thanks to our land. But this too is threatened by insecurity, among other things.

Finally, I want people to understand that Sheikh Jingir does not speak for all Muslims in (Northern) Nigeria. Please spare us and our religion. Most of us hope he changes course before it is too late, in sha Allah.
