19-year-old Karmelo Anthony has been found guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a 2025 track meet. The closely watched trial that drew national attention and sparked debate over self-defense, race and school safety.

The jury is currently deliberating the sentence and are now able to consider the possibility of "sudden passion." The defense argued that if the jury feels Anthony felt terror during the incident, then sudden passion applies – and that comes with a different sentencing range. For sudden passion, the sentence can range from 2 to 20 years. For murder, the sentence can range from five to 99 years. This is what the jury now deliberates.

Students that witnessed the murder of Austin Metcalf at the hands of Karmelo Anthony have given their testimony on what they witnessed

4 of the 6 students that gave testimony were black - which is an important fact due to this case garnering so much attention due to race

All of the students testified that Karmelo was the aggressor while Austin tried to keep the peace - even stating to Karmelo that he didn’t want to fight

Students also testified that they all asked Karmelo to leave over 15 times - but Karmelo refused to leave

This is a key detail because Karmelo is claiming self defense - but all students are saying not only did Karmelo have an opportunity to leave the area he is now claiming where he feared for his life - but they were repeatedly telling him to go
