Harassment over Bangladeshi tag continues in West Bengal

The alleged practice of subjecting poor Indian citizens to harassment and attempting to push them back into Bangladesh appears to be continuing. Earlier, a poor woman from Birbhum, Sunali Khatun, along with her family was allegedly deported to Bangladesh despite having documents to prove Indian citizenship. Following questions over the action, the government was eventually compelled to bring her and others back to India. Now, another similar case has emerged from Uttar Dinajpur district.
On the night of June 19, police reportedly took Jalil Akhtar from his home in Uttar Dinajpur on suspicion that he was a Bangladeshi national. He was subsequently detained at a holding centre on the same grounds. His family, however, maintains that Jalil has been an Indian resident for several generations and possesses documents including a voter ID, Aadhaar card and ration card, along with citizenship-related documents belonging to his ancestors.
According to the family, Dalkhola police initially arrested Jalil and handed him over to the BSF for possible pushback to Bangladesh. The family claims that, after examining his documents, the BSF did not send him across the border and instead returned him to the detention centre.
The family further claims that they approached the Superintendent of Police and submitted the relevant documents, but no action was taken despite the documents being examined. They allege that Jalil was subsequently arrested again by Dalkhola police in connection with a case that they believe is false.
These allegations are based solely on the account provided by Jalil's family and require verification from the police, the BSF and other relevant authorities.

At this stage, it is imperative that the Director General of Police, West Bengal, personally looks into the matter, ensures that Jalil's citizenship documents are properly examined, and takes appropriate steps to protect him if he is found to be an Indian citizen. The person was a voter in 2026 electoral roll and has land documents consenting from many years. I urge @DGPWestBengal , if the allegations of unlawful detention, harassment or fabrication of a case are found to be true, appropriate action should also be taken against those responsible. We are with the family to provide legal support to them. We will see an end to such atrocities on poor people.

First, they tried to cover up the entire scandal by leaking that the whole allegation was baseless. Now the CEO himself has admitted that his office did receive these Form 6 applications.

The only question that remains is, who gave him the authority to accept them? On what statutory provision were these fraudulent, bulk Form 6 applications accepted?

Especially when the Hon’ble Supreme Court had categorically stated that appeals by voters under adjudication would be heard exclusively by Appellate Tribunals? When ECI’s own instructions clearly limit submissions to just 50 Form 6 per day per individual?

A government that frightens citizens to their deaths forfeits any claim to democracy.

A 79-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man lost their lives after the sheer trauma of discovering their names missing from the electoral roll. In Medinipur, a man collapsed during an SIR hearing and had to be rushed to hospital. This is the human cost of turning voter verification into a coercive exercise.

Under @BJP4India and a compromised @ECISVEEP, citizens are being subjected to notices without clarity, deletions without explanation, and hearings without dignity, creating a climate of fear, especially for the elderly, the poor, and the marginalised.

Democracy cannot survive on intimidation. The people of Bengal deserve transparency, humanity, and accountability, and they deserve it now.
