I think comic book fans are misunderstanding why LANTERNS is connecting with such a big audience.
Obviously Hal Jordan, John Stewart and the Green Lantern Corps matter. But I don't think that's what's bringing everybody else in.
LANTERNS is prestige television. It's a slow-burn procedural mystery with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre airing Sunday night on HBO. That's basically the last vestige of appointment-TV monoculture we have left. THE SOPRANOS. GAME OF THRONES. THE LAST OF US. TRUE DETECTIVE. You put a really good show in that slot and people show up every Sunday to talk about it.
And look at how little LANTERNS has actually relied on Green Lantern spectacle so far. Two episodes in and we've gotten a twenty-dollar bill, a bottle opener, a lighter, a bird, a shield and a little flying around.
These are characters whose rings can manifest damn near anything they can imagine, and the show is barely interested in showing that off yet.
Because the mystery is the hook.
The performances are the hook. Hal and John slowly figuring each other out is the hook. The town, the murders, the conspiracy and wondering what the fuck is actually happening every week is the hook.
LANTERNS is almost an anti-comic book show in that way, and I mean that as a compliment.
They took Green Lantern and made an HBO Sunday night drama out of it.
That's why I think people outside the comic book bubble are showing up.
