Botswana did everything right: they put their diamond money in a sovereign wealth fund, funded education, successfully fought corruption, and tried to diversify their economy. And it hardly made a difference. Growth still reversed when the diamond market went bust. The education spending produced hardly any improvement in student performance. Turns out “good institutions” are not, in fact, the secret sauce, at least not on their own. Pendant quarante ans, la gauche et le centre nous ont vendu le grand scam des « 50 nuances de gris ».
Ils nous ont expliqué qu’il existait un juste milieu intelligent, un capitalisme tempéré, une économie mixte raisonnable.
Que l’on pouvait garder l’efficacité du marché tout en laissant le politique « corriger » et « orienter ».

C’était un mensonge confortable.
Et plus personne n’y croit vraiment.

Il n’y a que deux positions cohérentes.

Soit tu penses que le politique, avec son appareil bureaucratique, doit allouer le capital.
Soit tu penses que seuls les individus qui risquent réellement leur propre peau sont légitimes pour le faire.

Pourquoi les politiques sont-ils de si mauvais allocateurs ?

Parce qu’ils n’ont aucun skin in the game.
Ils décident de l’usage de l’argent des autres, du temps des autres, du futur des autres.
Quand tu ne perds rien personnellement si tu te trompes, tu n’apprends jamais.
Tu multiplies les erreurs.
Tu continues.
Et très vite la corruption n’est plus un accident.
C’est le résultat naturel du système.

L’entrepreneur, lui, est le seul agent économique qui a réellement quelque chose à perdre.
Son capital.
Ses années.
Sa réputation.
Sa santé parfois.
S’il alloue mal, il disparaît.
S’il alloue bien, il crée de la valeur pour tout le monde, y compris pour ceux qui ne l’aiment pas.
Le profit n’est pas un vol.
C’est le signal le plus propre que de la richesse a été créée.

Milton Friedman l’avait dit sans détour il y a plus de quarante ans : l’État n’a rien à faire dans la gestion de l’économie.
Tout se passerait infiniment mieux si les politiques arrêtaient enfin de s’en mêler.
Ce n’est pas de l’idéologie.
C’est de l’observation empirique répétée sur un siècle.

Le combat d’aujourd’hui n’est donc pas une question de dosage.
C’est une question de principe.
Qui alloue le capital dans une société ?
Ceux qui n’ont rien à perdre, ou ceux qui risquent tout ?

Le 21e siècle appartiendra aux bâtisseurs.
À ceux qui préfèrent la liberté individuelle à la redistribution par décret.
À ceux qui comprennent que la prospérité ne se vote pas.

On a Sunday evening, August 15, 1971, Richard Nixon interrupted the broadcast of Bonanza to inform Americans that the dollar they held was now backed by nothing but his word. He called it "temporary." Fifty-plus years later, you are still waiting for the temporary part to end.

Understand what actually happened. Under Bretton Woods, foreign governments could exchange their dollars for gold at $35 an ounce. The dollar was a receipt. Gold was the money. Washington printed receipts far faster than it dug gold out of the ground, financing Vietnam and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society with the same press. De Gaulle noticed. So did others. France sent a warship to collect its gold, and the run was on.

Nixon had two honest choices: stop spending, or admit the dollar was overissued. He chose a third option. He defaulted, then blamed "international speculators" for the mess his own Treasury created. Classic.

Notice the language he used. He promised the dollar's action would "stabilize" prices. Consumer prices roughly quadrupled over the next forty years. A 1971 dollar buys you about fourteen cents of goods today. That is confiscation in slow motion, and it hit wage earners and savers hardest, the people holding cash rather than assets that float upward on the new tide of credit.

Here is the mechanism sound money advocates warned about for a century: Sever money from a physical anchor and you hand politicians an unlimited overdraft. Every deficit, every bailout, every war since 1971 rode on that Sunday broadcast. Ludwig von Mises died in 1973, having spent decades explaining exactly this.

Nixon called it "protecting" the dollar. He meant emptying it. You have been paying the invoice ever since.
