Congratulations to Alea on winning a Gold Medal🥇and a trip to the Taiwan International Science Fair!
The 4th top prize in a row under our mentorship. Huge thanks to @biozentrum, @NCCR_AntiResist, @UniBasel_en for their continuous support.

Thanks to @biozentrum and @NCCR_AntiResist for support.
Thank you, Katrin (@biozentrum) for a great summary of our paper!

New research by @Basler_Lab reveals a surprising microbial trade-off: The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa activates a general defense program to survive “speargun” attacks from rival bacteria, but this defense makes it more vulnerable to antibiotics. 👇https://t.co/KG8v21A5hE
Big congrats to @ATejadaArranz and co-authors on this paper showing novel insights into the resistance to #T6SS effectors and an unexpected link to antibiotic resistance!
Thanks @NCCR_AntiResist for funding and supporting the collaboration with @JenalLab!

Update to BacFighT6, with presets for easy exploration of complex behaviors:
https://t.co/UTBM4lHefn
Try "battle royale" preset where prey (blue) produce capsule, attackers (red) move towards prey and feed on it, defenders (orange) retaliate!
Took a while to eliminate the reds!
@NatureRevMicro Thank you for all the help putting this review together!
Anyone who would like to learn more about T6SS and run simple simulations of bacterial interactions, feel free to explore this:
https://t.co/0UnqXBQz9H
The prey (blue) multiply, don't move and produce capsule (purple). The predators (red) move towards prey and attack non-kin. They divide only if they lyse prey. The defenders (orange) move randomly and defend themselves by retaliation (divide if they lyse a cell). Who wins?
Major update to BacFighT6: https://t.co/0UnqXBR6Zf
Simulate the role of motility/chemotaxis, capsule production, activation by autoinducers, contact dependent killing, kin-exclusion, foraging and more. Long simulations, extensive data import/export and analysis. Interactive Q&A!
Check out the NotebookLM powered interactive Q&A: https://t.co/REyeWg0mIP
This is based on the scientific literature and the simulation code. Literature is cited in the help and the documentation. Extremely helpful!
To make our research more approachable, I used #Gemini to develop (mostly by #vibecoding) a simulation of #T6SS mediated bacterial interactions. I hope that you'll have as much fun as I have with this and that you'll learn something new!

Thank you, Katrin, for a great news article:
Damaged but not defeated: Bacteria use nano-spearguns to retaliate against attacks

And the @SNIunibas for producing this video summary:

Poke bacteria with a sharp needle and they poke back in just a few seconds!
Congratulations to Mitchell (and others) for this analysis of Pseudomonas #T6SS assembly in response to membrane damage!

Apply now for the prestigious and independent #BiozentrumPhDFellowships. Great science. Unique rotation-based selection of research group and other incentives. The summer call is open until May 18, 2025. https://t.co/LzyyXOQOHb @biozentrum@UniBasel_en
For over 10 years, we've known that neighboring P. aeruginosa cells engage in rounds of H1-T6SS firing. It was unclear how this starts since H1-T6SS only fires in response to an attack. Now we know:
