Jim Rathmann after the 1954 Indianapolis 500, Jim started in Car #38, gave up the car (heat exhaustion) to Pat Flaherty, Pat wrecked on Lap 111, Jim then drove in relief for teammate Sam Hanks, on Lap 192 the crankshaft locked up sending Jim for a wild spin down the frontstretch.

89 years ago today, Wilbur Shaw won the 1937 Indianapolis 500. Jigger Johnson is the final Riding Mechanic to win the Indianapolis 500. Ralph Hepburn finished 2nd, 2.16 sec behind Shaw, the closest finish in the Indianapolis 500 until the 1982 race.
