So yeah, just watched #DIGGER!
Does it work as an entertaining film? Absolutely not!
Does it work as a fascinating work of art? Yes, it does.
I’d argue the title itself is just one of several plot twists #AlejandroGIñárritu buried in DIGGER: more than #TomCruise character’s adjective, the DIGGER here is supposed to be US, the audience, not just because this film, as a piece of art, has so much more than what its surface shows to be dug out of the film, but because it really provokes you to understand what the film is truly about, the meaning behind each scene, the reason around each creative decision.
It’s a film from which we won’t be able to get most of its depth until we exhaustedly discuss it and / or we can literally analyse it, piece by piece, once we can pause & play it at home. The production design itself, already rich at first sight, very likely has loads of puzzles to be found & connected as much as the plot itself.
But as I said, the film refuses to be entertaining, and it does so deliberately.
To a fault, DIGGER spends too much time on a mission of subverting expectations.
I love plot twists, but when you make sure to show me in the first 20 minutes that everything I’m about to see will have a twist or is not what it seems, it kinda betrays the very meaning of having plot twists. When we already expect every surprise to be a surprise, the impact diminishes, and the more you do it, the more you empty them. And DIGGER does it A LOT.
And I know this is one of the points the film tries to make, it’s an incredible allegory of our complexity- and hypocrisy - as human beings.
We say we want truth, but we overreact or can’t act at all when truth is actually served.
We say we don’t want cliche but get outraged when we don’t get them.
We say we want auteurs to do their thing, but we complain when they do and it’s not what we expected.
We say we want original takes but god forbid if something we care about gets changed/adapted.
We pretend to care about causes more than the people who actually face those situations or consequences of them in real life, but we do nothing effective to actually prevent those causes from happening because, well, they aren’t our own causes, really.
We say that #TomCruise should accept his age and stop playing the action hero but get disappointed or don’t show up at all when he finally does.
We say we hate big corporations and their actions until they give us something we truly wanted or help to finance something we need or love, and suddenly we forget, forgive or simply play the blind eye - while it is convenient of course.
I understand all these & many other points the movie makes. I loved that & applaud them for doing so. But I won’t be hypocrite and pretending I didn’t want the minds behind DIGGER to have spent as much time to find a clever way to make DIGGER a little more entertaining without betraying its premises of confronting expectations and not giving people what they say they want.
Because in the end of the day, this is not a #WesAnderson film released by #Focus or #A24, which no one will make essays against original films if it flops.
But when you get $160M+ on your hand and make something that tries so hard not to be accessible or likeable, to be released by a major studio, that undercuts several future bets on original films that same studio could have made with that amount of money. With great power comes great responsibility, and in the last decade or so, way too many directors have become way too reckless regarding the consequences for original storytelling as a whole when a massive juggernaut which happens to be an original becomes one of those “I’m sure it will do great on streaming/ stand the test of time” films.
I have no doubt DIGGER’ll be loved by cinephiles overtime. But at what cost? We will never know. But do we really care, as long as we’ve got this one made?
Yeah, I know, that’s the point of DIGGER, haha!
#DIGGER is already in theatres worldwide!
