🇨🇳CHINA'S CASTE SYSTEM

THE HUKOU SYSTEM :
Established in 1958, the hukou system classifies citizens at birth as either rural or urban, severely limiting transitions between the two.

It was designed to keep constant supply of poor cheap slaves for the manufacturing industry.

The system excludes rural hukou holders from essential social welfare programs including Subsidized housing and healthcare, Disability benefits, Subsidized education. They are banned from higher education.

Rural citizens face deep social ostracization and are largely funneled into dangerous, demanding, and low paying jobs.

Over the last three decades, the rural share of national income dropped from 70% to 20%. Even when moving to cities, rural residents earn roughly 40% less than natural born urban citizens.

EU-CHINA RELATIONS OF CAUTION 🇪🇺🇨🇳

• Beijing's support for Russia during the Ukraine war has alarmed Europe.
• EU sanctions over human rights concerns in Xinjiang and Tibet have angered China.
• The EU's arms embargo on China, imposed after the Tiananmen Square crackdown, remains in place.
• EU sees China's massive trade surplus with Europe as increasingly unsustainable.($ 4trillion surplus in last 25 years)
• China has restricted exports of critical minerals that European industries depend on.
• The EU has responded with anti-dumping investigations and tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

As a result, Europe is trying to reduce strategic dependencies through supply chain diversification and trade defense measures.

But Europe is internally divided on China.

Germany prioritizes preserving trade ties. Italy has taken a tougher line and exited the Belt and Road Initiative. Central and Eastern European countries seek investment but remain wary of economic coercion, while Hungary and Slovakia continue to maintain relatively close relations with Beijing.

Europe wants to de-risk from China. The problem is that there is no single European approach to doing so.

THE FUTURE BATTLEFIELDS

Future conflicts may be less about who has the biggest army and more about who can innovate faster and make war unbearably expensive for the other side.

Ukraine has shown how cheap drones can destroy tanks and blunt a much stronger enemy.

Iran has shown how missiles, drones and strategic chokepoints can disrupt global trade and impose costs on far more powerful countries.

China is watching both wars closely.
