These three men are identical triplets who were separated at birth, adopted by different families, and didn't meet until they were 19.

Years later, they found out they had been split up on purpose, as part of a secret experiment.

In 1980, Bobby Shafran, one of the brothers, arrived at a college in New York, where strangers greeted him like an old friend and kept calling him Eddy.

Bobby had no idea why. Then someone figured it out. He looked exactly like a student from the year before, Eddy Galland.

The two had the same birthday, and both had been adopted. So Bobby went to Eddy's house to see for himself. When Eddy opened the door, it was like looking into a mirror.

Their story ended up in the newspapers. A few days later, a third young man named David Kellman saw the photo and recognized his own face.

The brothers became instant celebrities. They went on talk shows, appeared in a movie, and opened a restaurant in New York.

But their families wanted answers. Why had the adoption agency split them up without ever telling anyone?

The truth was darker than anyone imagined.

The boys had been part of a secret study on nature versus nurture. For years, researchers had visited them as children, filming and testing them. Their parents were told it was a routine study of adopted kids.

As adults, the brothers never got over what had been done to them. In 1995, Eddy took his own life. He was 33.

The results of the study were never published, and the records are sealed at Yale University until 2065.
