The first scenario leads to a simple calculation, whereas the second is better solved by direct measurement. The question needs to be more specific.

8.30pm on a Thursday evening and @asda say they can't sell me a lottery ticket for the weekend because they have "switched off the machine". Luckily, I called in at @Tesco on my way home and they were more than happy to take my money. #meetingcustomerexpectations

Once again @asda a busy Sunday afternoon with at least half of the tills shut and long queues at those that are open. On top of that, you have customers queuing at both scan & go and self scan. There was a time when you valued your customers. #takingthepiss
